Beyond the Classroom

Our students can take advantage of several curricular and extra-curricular activities which help enrich their learning and creativity in the visual arts.

Annually in March, the Department of Art and Design recognizes outstanding student achievement in the visual arts through a special event, the Horvath Student Exhibition. Since 1975, this event has displayed award-winning works that include dramatic sculpture, exuberantly colored paintings and an array of experimental drawings, ceramics, prints, photographs and designs.  Department faculty invite a professional artist, art historian, graphic designer or photographer to jury the show and select awardees. The Department of Art and Design hosts a reception and evening of open studios for the Horvath Student Exhibit as the closing event of the University's annual Stander Symposium. During the reception, selected students receive awards for the Horvath Award for Realism, 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, and Honorable Mention.

Support for the awards comes from the Bela Horvath Award Fund established by Mrs. Horvath in honor of her husband, a Hungarian artist who found refuge in Dayton during and after World War II.  Bela Horvath taught painting at the University of Dayton in the 1950s.

The Radial Gallery is located within the Department of Art and Design on the second floor of Raymond L. Fitz Hall at 1529 Brown St. Open access to parking and Raymond L.
