Academic Initiatives

Where do we fit in?

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Dayton is the largest academic unit at the University of Dayton. We offer more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. While we are able to provide a wide range of programming in the arts, the humanities, the sciences and the social sciences, our educational philosophy continues to focus on personal attention and close faculty-student interaction.

We bring the strengths of the small liberal arts college into the context of a large comprehensive university. Our students experience a curriculum devoted to combining theory and practice, and find themselves on the path to post-graduate success. Potential employers value the University's commitment to educating the whole person, while graduate and professional schools find our students well-prepared to meet the challenges of post-graduate education. The College fosters an environment marked by connected learning and sends forth broadly-educated students who are thoroughly prepared for their future endeavors.

We are organized into nineteen departments and ten interdisciplinary program areas. We also sponsor the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community, the Hanley Sustainability Institute, the Human Rights Center, the Institute for Pastoral Initiatives, the Center for Tissue Regeneration and Engineering at Dayton (TREND), the Integrative Science and Engineering Center and the Rivers Institute (a division of the Fitz Center).

Our faculty members support undergraduate degree programs across a range of disciplines representing the humanities, the sciences, the social sciences, and the performing and visual arts. We offer programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Science, the Bachelor of Fine Arts, the Bachelor of Music, and the Bachelor of General Studies, which is a non-traditional degree program.

At the graduate level the College supports Master of Arts programs in English, communication, pastoral ministries, psychology, and theological studies; Master of Science programs in biology, chemistry, and applied mathematics; a Master of Computer Science, and a Master of Public Administration. We also support three Doctor of Philosophy programs in biology, theology, and electro-optics.

The College provides instruction to students in communication skills, critical thinking, social and cultural criticism, computation, scientific reasoning, historical analysis, and religious and moral awareness. These qualities are fundamental and essential to each student's full and integral development as a broadly educated person. We serve not only our own students, but also the students of the professional schools; ensuring that basic, as well as applied fields of study, are available to all students.
