2018 Symposium: #Re-think Addiction

Thank you for attending the 9th Annual University of Dayton & Miami Valley Hospital Healthcare Symposium.  Please join us again next spring.

It seems a day does not go by that we do not see headlines related to drug addiction, overdose related deaths and the cost of the present “opioid epidemic.”

“Opioid addiction, abuse and overdose deaths cost Ohio from $6.6 billion to $8.8 billion, according to a report from the C. William Swank Program in Rural-Urban Policy at Ohio State University.” (

“First responders throughout the area are strained. Accidental exposure by those trying to help has led to overdoses.” (

“Courts and morgues are clogged.” (Dayton Daily News, Oct. 17, 2017)

“Dayton Ohio was named No. 1 in nation for drug overdoses.” (Dayton Daily News, May, 24, 2016)

Clearly, we are in the depths of a deep and complicated problem. How do we begin to address the situation? While the news is troubling, there are also clear points of light as new and innovative approaches to both understanding and addressing addiction are developing. The focus of the 2018 University of Dayton and Miami Valley Hospital Healthcare Symposium is “#Re-think Addiction.” An exceptional line-up of speakers discussed these various models and innovative practices.
