Becoming Catholic
RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
Becoming A Roman Catholic
Thank you for your interest in becoming Catholic. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (or RCIA) is a journey of personal discovery, faith sharing, and learning about the Catholic Church. The RCIA group offers inquirers opportunities for discussion and to ask questions while discerning possible entrance into the Catholic Church.
Saint Oscar Romero explains, “Each one of you has to be God’s microphone. Each one of you has to be a messenger, a prophet...Wherever there is someone who has been baptized, that is where the church is. There is a prophet there. Let us not hide the talent that God gave us on the day of our baptism and let us truly live the beauty and responsibility of being a prophetic people.”
Saint Oscar Romero reminds us that each one of us is on a faith journey, searching for a path towards God. Know of our prayers for you as you discern this RCIA journey. We pray that you may continue to draw closer in your relationship with God and with one another. We pray that you will be open minded and aware of the Holy Spirit’s presence in your life. We pray that you may draw inspiration from these words of Saint Oscar Romero and courageously use your gifts and talents to live in a way most pleasing to God.
The RCIA group is open to all students, faculty and staff, and it will begin meeting weekly in October. If you are interested in learning more about this process and possibly becoming Catholic, please contact Katie Mathews, Campus Minister for Liturgy and Sacraments.
We are glad that you are interested in Confirmation preparation at the University of Dayton. This preparation process is an opportunity to grow in your faith, to grow in your ability to share about your faith, and to grow in your knowledge about some important lessons about spirituality in the Catholic tradition.
The process takes place each academic year; the group meets once per week for six weeks leading up to the Sacrament of Confirmation. These sessions are flexible, and topics are determined based on group interest and prior understanding of the Catholic faith.
This process is available to all current students, faculty and staff who have been baptized in the Catholic Church. If you are interested in being confirmed at the University of Dayton, please contact Katie Mathews, Campus Minister for Liturgy and Sacraments.
The local Christian community has a role in the celebration of infant baptism as well as in assisting parents in their child’s Christian formation. For that reason, it is the practice of the Roman Catholic Church that infants be baptized in their parents’ parish church. Since the university is not a parish, baptism of infants and children are held in the Chapel by rare exception.
You are encouraged to join your local parish as they welcome new families and provide ongoing support to you in Sacrament preparation. For help finding a parish in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, click here.
If you were baptized at Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, please contact Holy Angels at (937) 229-5911 to obtain your Baptismal records.
