National Poetry Month
By Kayla Harris, Librarian/Archivist
National Poetry Month is celebrated throughout April as a way to increase awareness and appreciation for poetry. Reading poetry can be be intimidating for some but there is plenty of notable Marian poetry available on All About Mary in a wide variety of styles. Some of the poetry is organized by author such as Thomas Merton, Virginia Kimball, and John Donne. Other poetry is arranged for a specific season or theme. There is also a selection of poetry in Spanish and Polish. Below is a poem translated from Polish to English by Danuta Romanowska that particularly resonates with me as a mother of two children.
When a Child Is Sick
When in some home somewhere,
a child is sick with fever, cough,
And looks as if it will not be healthy,
When on the chair the night nurse falls asleep,
Who slips down as a bright cloud through the wall,
with coat rustling on the carpet?
Who comes out of the frame and bends over the sick?
Who changes the compress and corrects the pillow?
It is the Lady of Czestochowa - my Dear, it is our Holy Mother.
