Marian Library faculty are offering a new 1-credit mini-course for University of Dayton students this fall semester, UDI 263: Medicine and Miracles: Mary at the Intersection of Faith and Healing.

Historically, the Blessed Virgin Mary has been linked with stories of miracles and medical cures. From the baths at Lourdes, France, to prayers to end the coronavirus, people throughout history and across the globe have appealed to Mary for intercession in times of illness. Students will learn about and analyze materials from the Marian Library’s distinctive collections related to Mary and healing, miracles and other unexplained phenomena. By the end of this mini-course students will be able to identify and locate primary sources (including archival collections, circulating material, artifacts and artwork) in the Marian Library and analyze a primary source for context and relevance. They will compare and connect historical sources to contemporary events and communicate the context and relevance of a primary source to an audience.

The Marian Library encourages students to consider this course when finalizing their Fall semester schedules. Faculty and staff may choose to audit this course for professional development.
