University Libraries

1 Day for All of UD
By Katy Kelly
The University of Dayton Libraries are ready to celebrate One Day, One Dayton on April 6 — a 24-hour celebration of philanthropy. Each unit, including the Libraries, has the opportunity to raise funds for programs to help students reach incredible heights through scholarships, enhanced hands-on learning experiences and the best in academic leadership and support.
The Libraries Dean’s Fund for Excellence allows flexibility to support the areas of greatest need in Roesch Library, the Marian Library, and Archives and Special Collections. The funds from One Day, One Dayton 2022 will enhance student learning through exhibits and programs, both in the Libraries’ galleries and online. In addition, funds will support the digitization of Flyer News issues published between 1955 and 1970, ensuring that this selection of fragile and highly used student newspapers is preserved and available online for research. We also hope to purchase an additional piece of furniture for students — a popular study pod with an adjustable desk, chair and lamp.
Make your plan to give online at the One Day, One Dayton website. View the images below for more information on each exciting project that you could help fund with a gift to the Libraries Dean’s Fund for Excellence on April 6.
One Day, One Dayton in Review
Each year we assemble ideas for the most timely and in-demand projects in the University Libraries. Gifts from previous years supported our success, such as the 2021 initiatives that connect the University and the greater Dayton community with history. Important collections and art are made available for learning, research and reflection.
- Read and download newly digitized, fully searchable issues of The Exponent, a UD student-run monthly publication from 1903 to 1960 that provides one-of-a-kind student perspectives of society, culture, student life, politics, religion and the economy in decades of great innovation, strife, prosperity, war and social change.
- View photos and learn more about the conservation of a fragile statue of the Madonna and Child in the Marian Library. This statue is currently undergoing more research and analysis to find out more about its materials and age before it will be used in exhibits and classes.
- Cassette tape recordings have been digitized and added to eCommons, completing the Joseph Watras Collection about desegregation in Dayton schools, connecting to the Libraries’ strategic plan to highlight events, diverse voices and scholarly works that haven’t received a lot of attention.
- Digitized tape recordings from the collection of Sally Cunneen, a religious scholar and feminist, are available upon request for use by researchers and in the classroom.
One Day, One Dayton is always an exciting day that shows off Flyer pride and strong support for UD. The positive effects of our funded projects on student learning and research are inspiring. Thanks for considering a gift on April 6.
