Fitz Center for Leadership in Community
Community Engagement at UD
Community engagement at the University of Dayton describes mutually beneficial collaborations between the University and our communities (local, regional/state, national and global), practicing reciprocal, responsive and respectful relationships. Working in community partnerships and through a communal understanding of issues and the sharing of resources, we engage in social justice action that works for the Common Good.
While the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community is the largest center devoted solely to community engagement at UD, we share this work with multiple campus partners. You can find them here:
Community-Engaged Learning FAQ
It is critical to track and understand our courses that have community engagement and experiential learning components to them. While CEL is a part of E.L., it has its own specific guidelines and criteria. This work will also help us with our Carnegie Community Engagement Reclassification. E.L. is important to be tracked broadly for Blue Sky and other institutional priorities. Since CEL also counts as E.L., we ask you to tag both.
If your course fits the guidelines of a community-engaged learning course, tag the course as CEL and E.L. If your course involves hands-on learning that is experiential, but not community engaged, tag it as E.L. If you have questions about Experiential Learning, contact Karen Velasquez for more information.
We realize that community activity often happens in levels or layers that are complex. We have developed a scale of community activity that is helping students, faculty and staff reflect on their work within the community. If you have specific questions about if your unit would consider your course CEL in light of these guidelines, please contact Samantha Kennedy or the following Carnegie Representatives:
- College of Arts and Sciences: Denise James
- School of Engineering: Kelly Bohrer
- School of Education and Health Sciences: Graham Hunter
- School of Business Administration: Vince Lewis
