Brewing change: Flyer Enterprises Sustainability Consulting tackles plastic waste at Heritage

By Christy Shin

In the bustling world where convenience often trumps sustainability, Flyer Enterprises Sustainability Consulting (FESC) is spearheading a transformative initiative at one of our favorite coffee spots: Heritage.

The mission?

To encourage customers to make an eco-conscious choice by opting for "for here" drink options. How might this work? A simple yet effective "For Here" punch card.

Heritage, a cozy on-campus cafe owned by Flyer Enterprises, is known for its tagline "A place to sip. A place to stay." Yet, despite the inviting atmosphere, most customers opt for the to-go experience, contributing to plastic waste and raising environmental concerns. Considering this, FESC recognized the potential for change and set out to make a difference.

The primary goal of our project is clear, reduce resource consumption and waste at Heritage. The proposed solution involves distributing punch cards to customers and offering a free cup of coffee to reward those who accumulate 10 “for here” drinks. Beyond these objectives, the project aims to foster awareness about sustainability among Flyer Enterprises’ employees and customers. It's not just about changing habits, it's about building a culture of conscious choices.

As the project is already in motion, many steps have been taken already. Designs have been approved, physical punch cards have been produced and punch cards are currently being handed out. Our next steps include evaluating the metrics of the punch card and, hopefully, continuing this project next school year. With this, the possibility of expanding this initiative to other Flyer Enterprises coffee divisions is also on the horizon.

The "For Here" Punch Card Initiative stands as a beacon of sustainability in the heart of campus life, reminding us all that small changes can lead to significant impacts. This project was made possible with Flyer Enterprises’ willingness to our ideas and support to help us create a more sustainable reality. Through collaboration, innovation and a shared commitment to a greener future, FESC and Flyer Enterprises are brewing change, one cup at a time.
