Hanley Sustainability Institute
Climate Action for Peace event, free concert Thursday
By Mark Gokavi
University of Dayton students, staff, faculty and others are invited to a PEACE DAYton panel and dialogue Thursday in the Kennedy Union ballroom.
The 2019 UN International Day of Peace theme is Climate Action for Peace. Panelists, videos and resource sheets will highlight initiatives at UD, in the greater Dayton area and globally that are taking actions towards nonviolence and sustainability.
Organizers say that through table dialogue, they will explore the connections between human rights, peace and the environment and how to be courageous in faith, cultural values and ethics for the common good.
The AVIATE Path-eligible event is from 5:45 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19. Please RSVP as soon as possible for an optional dinner starting at 5:30 p.m.
The event is sponsored by: Hanley Sustainability Institute; UD Sustainability Club; UD Center for Catholic Education; UD Center for Social Concern/Campus Ministry; UD College of Arts & Sciences; UD Human Rights Center; Marianist Environmental Education Center (MEEC); and PEACE DAYton.
At 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, the World House Choir will perform a free concert at Levitt Pavilion in downtown Dayton. The performance, Missa Gaia: A Mass in Celebration of Mother Earth, is in conjunction with PEACE DAYton.
Organizers say Missa Gaia is a 40-minute contemporary work derived from a traditional religious form meant to move listeners to reflect on the interconnectedness and sanctity of all life on earth. It weaves the recorded calls of wolf, whale, and harp seal together with choral voices, soloists and a small ensemble of instrumentalists. Guests from the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company will join in for several movements.
Admission is free; donations are welcome. Other performances of Miss Gaia are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 18 and Saturday, Sept. 21, both at 7 p.m., at the Antioch College Foundry Theater on Corry Street in Yellow Springs and also at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 at the High Street Methodist Church in Springfield.
