Why Pray the Rosary? by  Brother John Samaha, S.M.

More than a century ago, a proud university student boarded a train in France and sat next to an older man who seemed to be a peasant of comfortable means. The brash student noticed the older gentleman was slipping beads through his fingers. He was praying the rosary.

"Sir, do you still believe in such outdated things?," the student inquired. "Yes, I do. Don't you?," the man responded. The student laughed and admitted, "I do not believe in such silly things. Take my advice. Throw the rosary out the window, and learn what science has to say about it."

"Science? I do not understand this science. Perhaps you can explain it to me," the old man said humbly, tears welling in his eyes.

The university student noticed that the aging gentleman was deeply moved. To avoid hurting further the older person's feelings, he said, "Please give me your address and I will send you some literature that will explain the matter to you." The old man fumbled in the inside pocket of his coat and pulled out his card. On reading the card, the student lowered his head in shame and was speechless. The card read: Louis Pasteur, Director of the Institute of Scientific Research, Paris. The deluded student had encountered his country's leading chemist and bacteriologist, and a scientist of worldwide renown.

Angelus Address: On the Meaning of Advent (Zenit website) December 3, 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters, good morning!

Last night I returned from the Apostolic Journey to Myanmar and Bangladesh. I thank all those that accompanied me with prayer and I invite you to join me in my thanksgiving to the Lord, who granted me to meet those populations, in particular, the Catholic communities, and to be edified by their witness. Impressed in me is the memory of so many faces tried by life, but noble and smiling. I carry them all in my heart and in prayer. Thank you so much to the people of Myanmar and to the people of Bangladesh! ...

To be heedful and vigilant are the assumptions not to continue "wandering far from the Lord's ways," lost in our sins and in our infidelities. To be heedful and to be vigilant are the conditions to enable God to break into our existence, to restore meaning and value to it with His presence full of goodness and tenderness. May Mary Most Holy, model in waiting for God and icon of vigilance, guide us to encounter her Son Jesus, reviving our love for Him.

Crèches from Mexico featured in bilingual exhibit and pilgrimage (Notre Dame News) November 29, 2017

Christmas nativity scenes crafted by artists in Mexico will be on display in six Notre Dame campus buildings November 29, 2017 (Wednesday) through January 28, 2018 (Sunday). The fourth annual International Crèche Exhibit and Pilgrimage features thirty-two crèches on loan from the Marian Library at the University of Dayton. The exhibit is sponsored by the McGrath Institute for Church Life.

A prayerful pilgrimage to view the crèches will be held December 3 (Sunday). Prayer, Scripture readings, and song will be led in English and Spanish. The event begins at 2 p.m. with a brief presentation by David Lantigua, assistant professor of theology, University of Notre Dame, and an activity for children at the Eck Visitors Center.

The pilgrimage will move from the Eck Visitors Center through campus to the other displays and end at the Main Building. Pilgrims are invited to bring the baby Jesus from their home crèche for a blessing. All are welcome....
