Free one-credit sustainability mini-course offered this spring for first-year students
By Mark Gokavi
A free, one-credit Exploring Sustainability, Energy and the Environment (SEE) mini-course for first-year students will be offered for the spring 2020 semester.
UDI 262 is a field trip/event-based course exploring land, water, waste, air, energy and justice concerns. To complete this course, students attend three class sessions and complete at least 15 hours of mostly expenses-paid field trips and/or service, special or speaker events. Many options are AVIATE/Path eligible. There is one reflection paper due at the end of the semester.
Some of the planned experiences include: Marianist Environmental Education Center (MEEC) native ecosystem hike, service or retreat; Miami Conservancy District river system and corridor; dinner/dialogues; renewable energy initiatives; environmental justice and faith concerns; urban farming and food; Riverscape skating and downtown sustainability; student sustainability-related club events and UD campus sustainability initiatives; Cincinnati Zoo sustainability tour and Jungle Jim’s International Market; Yellow Springs/Clifton Gorge trip; films and discussions.
“It's a great way to explore your interest in the Sustainability Program - sustainability major and minor - and other great experiences and interact with students, staff and faculty engaged in leadership and service,” said Sr. Leanne Jablonski, instructor and SEE Integrated Learning-Living Community coordinator. “You’ll learn about the scope and interdisciplinary nature of SEE-related issues and how they relate to your field of study, aptitudes and interests.”
Students can include the course in the normal registration process or add it with an add/drop form. Course orientation is Friday, Jan. 17, from 3:20-5:20 p.m. or by arrangement with your schedule and instructor.
