Erma comes to life on stage

Dayton's own Erma Bombeck will come to life on stage in the touching, entertaining one-woman comedy, Erma Bombeck: At Wit's End.

Join us at one of four special performances April 19-22 benefiting the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop endowment. Tickets are limited for the show, which runs in the intimate, 54-seat performance space at the Caryl D. Philips Creativity Center, 116 N. Jefferson St. in downtown Dayton.

Human Race Theatre Company's resident artist Jennifer Joplin stars as the literary icon whose candid commentary on life as a woman, spouse and mother made her the champion of suburban housewives everywhere and her newspaper columns a mainstay on kitchen refrigerators for more than 30 years. Full of personal anecdotes and sprinkled with plenty of Erma's famous one-liners, it's a charming biography that proves "if you can't make it better, you can laugh at it."

VIP tickets are $50 for the 8 p.m. opening preview on Thursday, April 19, which includes a meet-and-greet reception with the actress after the play at Uno Pizzeria and Grill, 126 N. Main St. Mingle with the star of the one-woman show and enjoy light refreshments and a cash bar. Tickets for the remaining 8 p.m. shows on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday are $30. Tickets can be purchased for the preview performances by calling 937-228-3630 and using the code ERMA18 or clicking on this special link.

Written by Allison Engel and Margaret Engel and directed by Heather N. Powell, the play officially opens Thursday, April 26 and runs through May 13. The show runs 60 minutes, without an intermission.

Erma Bombeck: At Wit's End, playing on stages around the country, is bringing Erma's wit and wisdom to a new generation. The University of Dayton's immensely popular Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop, offered every two years, is dedicated to celebrating Bombeck's legacy and inspiring writers.

I wouldn't change a thing

I push the vacuum around my husband's size fourteen feet, which are plunked down in front of the coffee table. I miss a spot of carpet, but my husband's head is buried in a book. His feet are two immovable objects when he is reading. This tiny bungalow was perfect for me when I bought it. Determined to live alone forever after my starter-marriage of seventeen years fell apart, I purchased this house for me and my two cats, and basked in introverted glory until one day, I hired a painting ...

#1 - UCWA threatens to turn all politicians into laughing stocks if they don’t support their agenda

For decades now, the Union of Comedy Writers and Actors has worked tirelessly to elect someone to Congress to advance our agenda, so we can finally prove to the world how incredible we are. So when the perfect political candidate came along, Al Franken, we naturally poured tens of thousands of jokes, made at his opponent's expense, into his campaign. And it worked! He came from behind to win by 331 votes. And even though the ungrateful so-and-so didn't show his appreciation by introducing ...
