Christmas Blessings from the UD Center for Catholic Education

By Susan M. Ferguson, Director

Joy to the World!  Images of the Holy Night of the first Christmas draw our attention to you and your assistance in the mission of the University of Dayton Center for Catholic Education and the Catholic and Marianist mission.

Together we serve, seek, and nurture.

Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock.  (Luke 2:8, New American Bible)

As the shepherds watched over their flock and found Jesus, we too see that our watch and care for students in Catholic schools through ECHO’s counselors and family advocate bring the peace of Christ to those troubled by day-to-day conflicts and greater mental health challenges.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” (Matthew 2:1-2)

As we consider the Magi and their search for Jesus as truth and light, Lalanne teachers have a similar journey.  As true Marianist educators, our Lalanne teachers seek wisdom, impart knowledge for the sake of love, and teach students to love freedom for the sake of service.  Through their vocation to teach in Catholic schools, Lalanne teachers, sow seeds that will bear fruit for generations, and prepare the ground in which a culture of life, peace and love can flourish.

So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. (Luke 2:16)

As the Holy Family offers an example of love, so in the St. Remy Initiative we collaborate, cooperate and learn to lead.  Through the work of the St. Remy Initiative we work to engender family spirit among teachers, principals and ultimately among families attending Catholic schools. Members of the St. Remy Initiative work together to achieve lasting relationships of friendship and trust, supporting and challenging each other in developing their mutual gifts.

Our Center for Catholic Education team of seekers, servers, and nurturers are grateful to celebrate with you during Christmas and all year through!   Blessings in the New Year!

Reflection on the 2016 St. Remy Pilgrimage

"God knows us from within ourselves, not as objects, not as strangers, not as intimates, but as our own selves.  His knowledge of us is the pure light of which our own self-knowledge is only a dim reflection.  He knows us in Himself, not merely as images of something outside Him, but as “selves” in which His own self is expressed.  He finds Himself more perfectly in us than we find ourselves." - Thomas Merton, “No Man is an Island”
