Dr. Nick Elam selected for the 2024 Doris Drees Speaker Series

This year, the Department of Health and Sport Science will hold its annual Dr. Anne Crecelius Health and Sport Science Student Awards in conjunction with the return of the Doris Drees Speaker Series.

The event is free and open to the entire University of Dayton community. 

This year's Doris Drees Speaker will be Nick Elam, Ph.D. Elam is a two-time University of Dayton alumnus, with degrees in teacher education and educational leadership, and now an assistant professor of educational leadership at Ball State University. Elam is best known for inventing the Elam Ending in basketball, which has been praised as "perfection" and "the next step for basketball at all levels." His message is about persistence and positive thinking

In addition to the speaker, the event will include an awards ceremony that recognizes undergraduate student achievement in dietetics, health science, health & wellness, nursing, and sport management. 

The following students will be recognized in the awards portion of the event:

The John L. MacBeth Award of Excellence goes to an outstanding student in the Department of Health and Sport Science

The Lloyd L. Laubach Servant Leader Award of Excellence is presented to an outstanding servant leader in Health and Sport Science

The James B. LaVanche Award of Excellence goes to an outstanding female and male scholar/athlete graduating in the Department of Health and Sport Science

Ryan Packard

The Rising Excellent Student Award goes to an outstanding first-, second-, or third- year student in the Department of Health and Sport Science

The James M. Landis Memorial Awards of Excellence are presented annually to an outstanding graduating senior in each of the Health Science concentrations

The Thomas J. Frericks Awards of Excellence are presented annually to an outstanding graduating senior in each of the Sport & Wellness concentrations

The Elizabeth L. Schroeder Award of Excellence is presented annually to the outstanding graduating senior in the Food and Nutrition program for academic, departmental, and professional performance

The Flyer Future Nurse Leader award recognizes a student who is an exemplary leader and embodies the ethics and values of nursing and the University of Dayton's mission of serving the common good
