Montfort on the Rosary
Q: What did Montfort have to say about the efficacy of the Rosary?
A: We know about the fifteen promises regarding the Rosary attributed to St. Dominic and/or Alan of Roche. In his book, The Secret of the Rosary (Bay Shore, NY, 1992), Grignion de Montfort in a similar way, but more concisely, summarizes the benefits of the rosary. According to him (in the twenty-seventh rose of the book), the rosary has great spiritual efficacy which can be formulated as follows:
1. It gradually gives us a perfect knowledge of Jesus Christ
2. It purifies our souls, washing away sin.
3. It gives us victory over all enemies.
4. It makes it easy for us to practice virtue.
5. It sets us on fire with love of Our Blessed Lord
6. It enriches us with graces and benefits
7. It supplies us with what is needed to pay all our debts to God and to our fellow men, and finally, it obtains all kinds of graces for us from Almighty God.
The Secret of the Rosary is divided into two parts. In its first part it deals with "What the Rosary is" and in the second part informs the reader "How to Recite it," offering several methods of praying it and reminding the reader of the dispositions necessary for the recitation of the rosary. In the first part, de Montfort informs the reader about origin, name, the various prayers composing the rosary, and "wonderful favors" received through its power.
