Profile

Dr. Garten served as Dean of University Libraries for nineteen years. He currently serves as a Distinguished Moderator with the University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (UDOLLI). During his tenure he established the US Catholic Collection, expanded facilities for University Archives, implemented a range of library information technologies, expanded fundraising and development initiatives, and led campus-wide media services. Dr. Garten was part of the pioneer cohort of academic leaders who founded the Ohio Library and Information Network (OhioLINK) and later served two terms on the OhioNet Board of Directors. He held numerous national leadership roles with both the Association of College & Research Libraries and the Library Administration & Management Association. Over his nearly forty-year career in administration and teaching he served as a consultant or accreditation advisor to over 100 colleges, universities, museums, and libraries around the United States and abroad. In 1983 Dr. Garten was named a Distinguished Alumnus by the Kent State University School of Library and Information Studies. A member of the Graduate Faculty, for nearly a decade he taught courses and served on committees for the School of Education’s Ph.D. program in Educational Leadership.
