Administrative role

As an Assistant Dean, Dr. Washington's focus in the College of Arts and Sciences is on the departments of Art and Design, Communication, Global Languages, History and Music, as well as the  Theatre, Dance and Performance Technology Program.

Profile

Dr. Washington's primary research interest is in the African American military experience. He joined the faculty at the University of Dayton in 2010. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. His dissertation titled "Eagles on Their Buttons: The Fifth Regiment of Infantry, United States Colored Troops in The American Civil War," concerns the recruitment, experience and societal reintegration of black soldiers in the American Civil War.

Dr. Washington retired after 30 years of service in the United States Army at the rank of Colonel in the Corps of Engineers. He had two tours in combat, serving as a engineer company commander in the Persian Gulf War and as the MNF-I Senior Liaison Officer to the Iraqi Prime Minister's National Operation Center during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was twice awarded the Bronze Star Medal and also received the Legion of Merit. He has served in Germany, Iraq, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and several locations in the United States. He has served on the History faculty at the United States Military Academy at West Point and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He was the Professor of Military Science and the chair of the Department of Military Science at UD from 2003-07.
