What do you love most about UD?

I adore the opportunities for involvement. From clubs to internships to research, every student has a chance to fill out their resume and learn more about their field. The people on campus are incredibly friendly and some of the people I have met here are now some of my best friends, and, in a way, my found family.

What do you like most about your major?

The opportunities for clubs and extracurricular involvement and the mix of applied, practical classes that provide skills for the job force and classes that focus on theories and how to study the field in case you want to do research or just understand a topic more in depth. I have been able to take both kinds of classes. Opportunities like Statehouse Civic Scholars in Political Science have prepared me for a career in public service and involvements like Public Relations Student Society of America have given me amazing leadership and networking opportunities.

Favorite class at UD and why?

Currently my favorite class is CMM 355 or Rhetoric of Social Movements. The class includes a lot of theory about how social movements form while also giving us ways to analyze speeches, rhetoric and messaging for social movements, which is a very important skill when working in public relations and communications.

What piece of your academic journey has you most prepared to begin a career after graduation?

Internships and experiential learning have given me the tools necessary to succeed with my career after graduation. The summer going into my sophomore year, I was able to participate in the Statehouse Civic Scholars program, an elite internship cohort at UD where we live and work in Columbus for eight weeks. It has opened many doors for me and the ability to have applied work experience as early as my freshman year opened the door to me working during the school year getting more communications experience and getting involved in experiential learning like the Dayton Civic Scholars. It's where I volunteer with the City of Dayton's Human Relations Council, a government agency enforcing anti-discrimination laws for the city, doing public affairs and social media, all the while allowing me to give back to my community here in Dayton using the skills I gained from internships.

What clubs/organizations are you involved in at UD?

  • Office of Experiential Learning (Student Ambassador)
  • Dayton Civic Scholars
  • Phi Beta Chi (Community Service Chair)
  • Public Relations Student Society of America (vice president)
  • Flyer Consulting (project lead)
  • Students for University Advancement

Why did you choose UD?

I chose UD for three reasons. First, the experiential learning you gain from clubs and internship opportunities prepare you for a career and help you explore your passions. Second, UD's campus is beautiful and feels historic to be on, I love the architecture and various buildings and sections of campus and the City of Dayton itself has so many fun things to do from concerts to plays to parks and historical districts to visit. Third, the financial aid made it an excellent choice for me financially.
