What do you like most about your major?

I love the amount of flexibility and variety that comes with being an English major, and the same goes for Women's and Gender Studies. Of everyone I know in my majors, no one is taking the same route, which I think is so cool. Having such diverse learning experiences within one field allows me and my peers to dive into the areas that we find the most enjoyable and interesting, but we can still bond on the base level of our love for what makes our field our field. I also love how holistic the courses are in both majors. it is not too complex for me to combine my passions for the two because there is so much overlap between them already.

What do you love most about UD?

I like to say that UD is "perfectly medium sized." We are big enough that we have a variety of courses, student organizations and resources to offer, but small enough that class sizes aren't too overwhelming and unique opportunities are able to be offered. You will always be able to find a familiar face on campus.

Have you ever participated in faculty-mentored research? If so, what did you learn from that experience?

During the Summer of 2022, I had the opportunity to participate in the Dean's Summer Fellowship with the College of Arts and Sciences. This faculty-mentored research taught me about the benefits of using a flexible schedule to dive into one specific topic that I am passionate about. I also learned how to maximize my resources to find answers to the most obscure research questions.

Favorite class at UD and why?

My favorite class that I've taken at UD is ENG 220, because it was the first class I took that really felt like an English class. We read texts that initiated important discussions, and I learned valuable research and writing techniques. That course was the first time I learned about Paul Laurence Dunbar, an influential writer from Dayton, and the first class that I had with one of my favorite professors on campus.

What piece of your academic journey has you most prepared to begin a career after graduation?

I am a member of the Core Program, which is one of UD's Integrated Living-Learning Communities (ILLC). Core has been one of my favorite aspects of UD because it has had a consistent positive influence in my experience on campus, not only academically, but socially. The interdisciplinary approach that Core brings to education has heavily impacted the way I think about learning, so I will leave college ready to pursue challenging opportunities with curiosity and hope.

What clubs/organizations are you involved in at UD?

  • Creative Writing Club
  • Middle Ground
  • Studio Theatre
  • YDSA

Why did you choose UD?

I chose UD because I am from the Cincinnati area. I knew that being a Flyer meant that I would be able to stay close enough to home that I could see my family when I wanted, but far enough that I could start a new adventure on my own.

Is there anything else about your UD experience you think prospective students and their families should know?

No matter what your background is, what your talents are or what you're passionate about, there is a place for you at UD.
