Lieutenant Colonel Sommer was raised in Zionsville, Ind., and attended the United States Military Academy where he received a Bachelor of Science in Military Art and Science. LTC Sommer has served in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), 82nd Airborne Division, NATO Special Operations Command and 4th Infantry Division. In all of these units, LTC Sommer held leadership and staff positions that afforded him the opportunity to lead men and women in combat. LTC Sommer’s last assignment was as the Senior Aviation Trainer at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center located in Hohenfels, Germany, where he supported the combat readiness of the armed forces of the 31 member nations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and US forces assigned to U.S. Army Forces Europe command.

LTC Sommer also holds a Master of Science in Adult Education and Leadership from Kansas State University, as well as a Commercial Rotary wing pilot certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. He is a graduate of the Army Aviation Officer Basic Course, Initial Entry Rotary Wing Course, Aviation Captains Career Course, UH-60A/L/M, MH-60M and LUH-72A Qualification Courses, US Army Command and General Staff College, Airborne School, Air Assault School and the Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape Course (high risk).
