University of Dayton faculty and University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) researchers collaborated on research projects this past summer. Two projects were completed by School of Engineering faculty members and were focused on self-healing polymers and lightweight composite aircraft.

Darlene WeaverDarlene Weaver

Professor; Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs


An ecumenically trained moral theologian who specializes in moral anthropology and ethical theory, Darlene Weaver joined the University of Dayton in July 2023 as provost.

She received her B.A. from Carnegie Mellon University, M.A.R. from Yale Divinity School, and Ph.D. in ethics from the University of Chicago in 1998, with a particular focus on moral agency.

Our Work

As the chief academic officer, the provost's principal mission is to support and guide the academic and research efforts of the University.

Shared Governance

UD's Academic Senate is the representative body responsible for academic and educational policies of the University of Dayton having significant, university-wide impact. Its membership includes faculty, administrators and students.

Research

At UD, research is about more than innovation for the sake of discovery. It's about developing solutions to help others. Highlights include:

  • The University of Dayton has earned the status of "R1: Very High Research Spending and Doctorate Production" in the 2025 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. 
  • In fiscal year 2024, the University had $264.3 million in sponsored research revenue, 95% of it in the University of Dayton Research Institute.
  • The Office of Academic Research champions and catalyzes academic research, scholarship and creative activity.
  • At UD, our students research alongside faculty to create solutions with a real impact on society.
