2020-21 UD Speaker Series

The UD Speaker Series will be on hiatus during the 2020-21 academic year with plans to revive the series in 2021-22. While we are on this break you can view past series talks on YouTube and Warpwire.

    On Jan. 22, 2019, Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, best-selling author of "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?" and president emerita of Spelman College, delivered the University's Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Address.

    "The Legacy of King: 50 Years Later"

    On January 23, 2018, New York Times Magazine staff writer and 2017 MacArthur Genius Fellow Nikole Hannah-Jones gave the University's Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Lecture. Ms. Hannah-Jones is a National Magazine Award-winning journalist writing on modern day civil rights. She has written extensively on the history of racism and inequality, school resegregation and the disarray of hundreds of desegregation orders, and the decades-long failure of the federal government to enforce the landmark 1968 Fair Housing Act.

    "The Half-Life of Freedom: Race and Justice in America Today"

    On January 24, 2017, The New Yorker staff writer and professor of Journalism at Columbia Jelani Cobb gave a lecture titled "The Half-Life of Freedom: Race and Justice in America Today" as the University's Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Lecture.

    Each year the University of Dayton Speaker Series Committee asks the UD community to help assemble a slate of distinguished speakers representing a wide range of intellectual, cultural and social perspectives. Nominees should be willing to engage the campus and the community in thought-provoking discussions about critical issues facing our world. We invite your suggestions for the 2019-20 series, please submit nominations online by November 26, 2018 to be considered for the 2019-20 series.
