Session 7

Have We Lost Mary, Mother of the Church?

Our seventh forum proposed ways to fill the void and rekindle Marian devotion in the increasingly motherless culture confronting the Church. The goal was to restore a wholesome balance by bringing Mary back into the pews—and homes—as a real mother, not some mythological figure.

On Oct. 12, 2018, the forum began promptly via teleconference at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time (United States). After a brief introduction, each presenter gave a 20-minute presentation. The session concluded with an hour of open discussion and final remarks at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time.

Dr. Elizabeth M. Farley

Adjunct professor of systematic theology at Mount Angel Seminary, Saint Benedict, Oregon

Theologian and mother, Farley offered her perspective on bringing Mary into the intellectual formation of children, priests, and lay adults.

Dr. Michael Scherschligt

President and founder of the Holy Family School of Faith Institute, Overland Park, Kansas

Scherschligt offered the perspective of both a father and a specialist in forming teachers in Christian virtue and Catholic culture.
