Our students are able to interact appropriately and effectively with native speakers of French in real-life situations whether in the U.S. or abroad, after learning at proficiency levels defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and the Common European Framework of Reference.
Independent study allows students to explore topics of interest related to another major to enhance the student's experience. French majors have explored topics in economics, language teaching, history, politics and more.
Class time promotes active learning in a variety of contexts. Technology such as touchscreen capabilities, tools for collaboration and programs for creative language use enhance the learning experience. Authentic language and culture resources (texts, videos, films and music) and experiential learning opportunities (simulations, escape rooms) round out the experience.
The University offers a teaching licensure option in French through the dual-degree B.A. and B.S.E. programs conducted in conjunction with the Department of Teacher Education in the School of Education and Health Sciences.
