Transfer Student Resources

Transfer Student Responsibilities

Consider the following as a guide:

  • Actively seek information about your academic program; meet with an advisor from both the current institution and UD to take the courses that will apply to your major.
  • Be aware that remedial and developmental credits/courses will not transfer and apply toward any degree program.
  • Know exactly the credit that will be awarded and how it will apply to your program. Become familiar with the official credit evaluation process at UD.
  • Understand the policies that may affect your transition to UD (e.g., your grade-point average earned at the previous institution(s) will not transfer to UD, but will be used to determine institutional and program admission requirements).
  • Know that delays in developing and following an appropriate transfer plan or changing the plan (e.g., changing your major or withdrawing from courses) will likely reduce your number of applicable credits. It could potentially extend the length of time to complete the degree at UD.
  • Understand the requirements, policies, and procedures for transfer admission, course transfer, financial aid, scholarships and housing at UD.
  • Meet deadlines, restrictions, and other criteria like the policies regarding deposits being required prior to enrollment and the dates when any refunds of those deposits are available.
  • Complete all materials required for the admission application and submit them on or before all deadlines.
  • Notify UD regarding whether you will accept or reject the admission offer as soon as you have heard from all the institutions to which you applied by no later than the deadline date set by UD.
  • Confirm your intent to enroll and submit your required deposit to UD.
  • Take care of the To-do List available in Porches once you reviewed your financial aid offering and made your deposit.

Transfer FAQ

Here are answers to questions most often asked by students planning to transfer to UD. If you would like more information or need additional assistance, please contact the transfer team.

Transfer Admission

I applied to UD as a first-year student, and now I'm interested in transferring. Do I need to reapply?

Yes, if you attended college elsewhere after being admitted to the UD, you will need to reapply for admission. You can apply via UD's application or the Common App.

If you previously attended UD and are interested in returning, please complete the Intent to Return Form.

I owe my current school (or previous school) money and can't get a transcript. Can I still complete the admission process?

Official college transcripts are needed from all previously attended institutions to be reviewed for admission.

If I have attended multiple schools, do I need to send official transcripts from each institution?

Yes, official transcripts are needed from all institutions that you have previously or are currently attending.

I've already applied. How do I change my intended major?

Contact us at admission@udayton.edu.

Can I double major?

Yes — we offer options to double major, pursue minors and get a head start on graduate school through our bachelor's plus master's programs.

Students cannot declare a double major until they have arrived on campus and met with their academic advisor. Until then, contact admission@udayton.edu if you have questions.

What questions should I be asking during my campus visit?

  • How will my credits transfer?
  • How long will it take to complete my degree?
  • Do you evaluate/recognize work or life experience?
  • Can I get transfer credit for career tech/Tech Prep?
  • Can I finish my degree in 4 years?
  • How much does it cost to attend UD?
  • Can I come to UD even though I am still undecided about my major?
  • What is the best route to becoming a (career)?

What should I not assume about my current school and UD if I'm interested in transferring?

  • It is possible that there is no or limited support at your current institution to guide you through the transfer process, especially if your current school is a university.
  • It’s possible that you receive more support at your current community college about the transfer process.
  • Because your current university offered enough courses to go part-time, that doesn’t mean that is the case at UD where it’s best (almost needed) to go to school full time.
  • Availability of convenient times (evening, weekends, online) for your classes at the current school might not be available at UD.

Transfer Credit

Will my credit transfer to UD?

In order for your credit to transfer, your credit must meet the following transfer policies:

  • You have earned a C- or better in a college-level course.
  • Your current/previous institution(s) is regionally accredited* or an international institution that is formally recognized by its country’s ministry of education or its equivalent.
  • You have prior learning that was part of your military training, experience and coursework, or nationally recognized credit-by-examinations like AP, CLEP and IB.
  • Any developmental or remedial courses that UD deems as non-college level will not transfer. Any college-level courses that you completed more than 10 years prior to enrollment at UD might not transfer.

Please note that transferable credit does not necessarily mean it is "applicable" toward your program requirements. Some credits may transfer in as general electives that could count toward meeting the graduation credit hour requirement.

*The following are regional accrediting agencies in the United States:

  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) (doing business as Mid-Atlantic Region Commission on Higher Education)

Do I need to take foreign language courses?

Some degree programs, like Bachelor of Arts degree majors, have a second language proficiency requirement, which means you must demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English.

If you are interested in studying abroad, you will also need to demonstrate your language proficiency.

If you have completed foreign language courses at a previous institution, an official review of your transcripts will allow us to determine if additional coursework is needed, and you may be required to demonstrate your foreign language proficiency through an online test.

American Sign Language does not satisfy the foreign language requirement.

For more information, please contact the Honors Program.
