Community Engagement at UD

Students meeting at the Fitz CenterCommunity engagement at the University of Dayton describes mutually beneficial collaborations between the University and our communities (local, regional/state, national and global), practicing reciprocal, responsive and respectful relationships. Working in community partnerships and through a communal understanding of issues and the sharing of resources, we engage in social justice action that works for the Common Good.

The purpose of community engagement is the partnership of university knowledge and resources with those of the community, public, nonprofit and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good.

While the Fitz Center is the largest center devoted solely to community engagement at UD, we share this work with multiple campus partners and coordinate regularly.

GivePulse: UD Community Engagement Platform

The mission of GivePulse is to enable everyone in the world to participate and engage in lifting their community to new heights. They do so by providing a platform to list, find, organize and measure the impact of service-learning, community engagement, philanthropy and volunteerism in the community.

GivePulse connects community partners and members of the University of Dayton community. It increases access to opportunities while broadening our connected network. Community partners have the ability to manage, organize, and track data for events. Students, faculty, and staff can connect with partners, register for community engagement events, create events for their groups/classes and capture their direct impact and influence within the community. Through collective and organized data the University of Dayton will be able to measure, report, and reflect our overall impact within the community.

Carnegie Community Engagement Classification

The University of Dayton received the Carnegie Community Engagement Elective Classification in 2015 and is currently in the process of reclassifying. UD is one of 357 institutions that hold this classification.

The Carnegie Reclassification process is a rigorous self-study of Community Engagement. The application shows how the field is moving forward and where our campus needs to go to make the work deeper, more pervasive and integrated at an institutional level. The application ties to our institutional identity, keeps us accountable and helps be a catalyst for change.

By being a Carnegie Community Engaged Classified Campus, we prove that we value and commit to institutionalizing community engagement.
