Preparing for Orientation

As you begin your Flyer journey, you can always check the Porches-To-Do list to find your next steps.

Submit the Pre-Advising Form

Submit the Pre-Advising Form as soon as possible to help your advisor get to know you and help you create a first-semester schedule that sets you up for success. Your advisor will use the information you provide about any college-level credits you’ve earned, your academic record, your interest in available programs at UD and more, to recommend course options specific to your major and academic track.

While the deadline to complete this task is June 1, if you attend an earlier session, please review and update the form 2 weeks before your session to give your advisor time to review.

Review the Preparing for Registration Online Course

To help you prepare for course registration at orientation, you will complete the Preparing for Registration course online in Canvas. The course will be available in the Advising section of Porches beginning in April.

This course will answer many frequently asked questions about course registration, including explaining the Common Academic Program (CAP), how to review your sample plan of study, considerations about applying transfer/AP credit, and more.

Take Any Required Placement Exams

Some academic programs require placement exams to help determine the appropriate courses for you to begin your studies. If you need to take a placement exam, you'll see this on your Porches To-do List.

Set up Your Digital FlyerCard

The FlyerCard is your official UD student ID. With your digital FlyerCard, you can use your smartphone or Apple Watch to access buildings, attend events, make purchases and more. To set up your digital FlyerCard, you’ll upload a photo from your Porches To-do List. Beginning May 1, after your photo is approved (this can take 1-2 business days), you can download the GET mobile app, sign in with your UD credentials, and set up your FlyerCard.

Students attending an overnight orientation session must set up their digital FlyerCard to access their residence. This should be completed before orientation to avoid delays at check-in.

Contact Admission to Discuss a Change of Major (If Applicable)

If you're thinking about changing your major, please reach out to our recruitment and admission staff as soon as possible — don't wait until you're on campus at orientation. This will help our orientation team ensure you're placed in the appropriate orientation group and advisors can be prepared to meet you during the academic breakout session. This helps to ensure a smooth experience and avoid confusion on a busy and information-filled orientation day!

Getting to Campus

  • Address: Our campus is located at 300 College Park Ave., Dayton, Ohio. Once you arrive on campus, proceed to C Lot, where you’ll park for the day.
  • Please plan for additional travel time, as various events are taking place on and around campus, in addition to ongoing construction on Interstate 75, which may result in delays.
  • Parking in Lot CFrom the intersection of Brown Street and East Stewart Street, head south on Brown Street to Irving Avenue. Turn left onto Irving Avenue. Turn left at Evanston Avenue and follow orientation signage to C Lot, which will be on the left just past the RecPlex and across from Marianist Hall.

What to Bring

  • 2FA Mobile Device: To register for courses, you will need to log into your UD online account, which requires two-factor authentication (2FA) with the DUO mobile app. Be sure to bring your device with DUO set up, and make sure it’s charged to ensure a smooth experience.
  • Refillable water bottle: In an effort to be sustainable, we encourage students and guests to bring a refillable water bottle so they can utilize refill stations around campus.
  • Comfortable shoes: During orientation, you'll travel to several buildings and have the option to tour campus at the end of the day. While our campus is compact and very walkable, we encourage you to plan ahead and wear comfortable shoes.
  • Dress in layers: Ohio weather can be unpredictable. In the summer heat, it can feel even more cold indoors with air conditioning. With temperature fluctuations, consider dressing in layers for comfort.
  • Notebook or device for note taking: Prepare for information overload! You're going to learn a lot during orientation, and while we make every effort to break down information into memorable and bite-size pieces, you're going to want to take notes so you can reference the information later. Rest assured, most of the information presented will be available after orientation.

Orientation FAQ

How do I register for Orientation?

Enrolled students can register for orientation by logging into Porches and selecting the Register for Orientation item on the To-do List. There is limited capacity for each session; registration closes seven days prior to each session or when the session is full. If you must register for a later session, don’t worry — course capacity is managed to ensure that seats will be available in courses that will apply to your degree.

Can I bring additional guests?

Yes, each student is able to bring up to two guests. You can register your guests in the New Student Orientation Registration Form on Porches. All individuals listed will receive a confirmation email.

Parents and guests will follow a similar schedule to their student and will also have an opportunity for additional programming regarding student support.

Who do I notify about accommodations?

Any accommodations you or your guest(s) may need (dietary restrictions, allergies, technology, etc.) should be included in the New Student Orientation Registration Form completed on Porches. For any additional questions, please contact the Office of Learning Resources at 937-229-2066.

Please follow orientation signs to park in C Lot (see directions).

Are there places to stay near campus?

  • Students can stay overnight in Marycrest residence hall with a roommate. The cost is $50.

Patterson Blvd., is offering a discounted rate for orientation guests, available for overnight and one-day sessions.
