Prepare for Arrival

Now that you've confirmed your enrollment, you're officially a University of Dayton Flyer! Now it's time to customize your pre-UD experience.

This guide is designed to help you chart your path, understand next steps and learn about campus resources. A more detailed and personalized set of next steps can be found in Porches, the digital portal used by current UD students.

Next Steps for Confirmed Students

The day after confirming enrollment, you will receive an email inviting you to activate your UD online account so you can access your personalized Porches To-do List and begin completing the following items.

Activate Your UD Email Address

When you log in to Porches for the first time, your first task is setting up your UD email account. Click the UD email button to get started.

Once your account is activated, we recommend that you sign in to the account on your mobile phone so you receive notifications of new emails.

Check this email account frequently so you don't miss official University communications. This is the email that UD faculty and staff — including your academic advisor — will use to communicate with you.

Complete Pre-Advising Form

You'll complete the Pre-Advising Form on Porches to help your advisor get to know your interests and goals so they can help you create a first-semester schedule that sets you up for success. Your advisor will use the information you provide about any college-level credits you've earned, your academic record and your interest in available programs at UD and more, to recommend course options specific to your major and academic track.

Complete the form as soon as possible — you can come back and update your information ahead of your orientation session. While the task is officially due on June 1, if you sign up for an earlier orientation session, we recommend completing the form two weeks in advance to give your advisor time to review your information.

Register for New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation is your opportunity to prepare for life at UD and make connections on campus. You’ll register for first semester courses, meet other new Flyers and get your questions answered on topics ranging from experiential learning to dining and more. All new students are required to attend orientation.

To sign up:

  • Log in to Porches and select the Register for Orientation item on your Porches To-do List.
  • Select your orientation session then provide additional details such as guest information (up to two guests may attend with you), dietary restrictions, and more.
  • If you choose the overnight option, you’ll pay the $175 charge online before you complete the registration process.
  • There is limited capacity for each session; registration closes seven days prior to each session or when the session is full. If you must register for a later session, don’t worry — course capacity is managed to ensure that seats will be available in courses that will apply to your degree.

Orientation Options

One-Day Orientation

June 6, 8, 10, 16, 18, 30

You’ll spend a full day on campus (8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) engaging with other Flyers, faculty and staff in small and large group settings as you:

  • Explore campus resources and ways to get involved
  • Register for first-semester courses in a group of students in your academic area, guided by advising staff
  • Meet other new students and families
  • Learn how you’ll be supported by a Flight Crew and engage in experiential learning
  • Tour your residence hall and find where your classes will be held
  • Parent and family programming is provided to help you support your student

There’s no cost for the one-day orientation option, and complimentary lunch is provided. If you choose a one-day session, you’ll have the option to book optional overnight lodging, if desired.

Overnight Orientation

May 29-30, June 3-4

Based on past feedback, we’re offering a new overnight option (11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the following day) to allow more time to connect and engage on campus. In addition to the one-day activities, you’ll:

  • Stay overnight in a residence hall with a roommate
  • Meet 1:1 with an advisor to register for courses
  • Enjoy more opportunities for peer-to-peer social connection
  • Connect 1:1 with support offices that will be members of your Flight Crew

The cost for overnight orientation is $175, which includes student lodging and meals for you and up to two guests. Parents and guests who need overnight accommodations are encouraged to stay at the Marriott at the University of Dayton, conveniently located across from campus. Hotel accommodations are not included in the orientation charge.

Submit Your Housing Contract

One of the most exciting parts of college life is living on campus with friends and classmates. UD guarantees housing for students who confirm enrollment, and no additional housing deposit is required.

First-year students live in traditional residence halls that are co-ed by floor and feature a resident assistant on every floor, a chapel, study rooms and laundry facilities, which are free to use at no additional cost. Second-year students live in suite-style dorms or apartments, and upper-division students live in apartments and porch-clad houses in our unique student neighborhood.

Housing Assignments

To get started with housing, you’ll complete your Housing and Meal Plan Contract on Porches. Students do not have the option to select a specific housing facility — placement is random based on your high school graduation year and availability. Housing assignments will be released based on the date you submit your completed housing contract:

Housing Assignment Dates
Submit housing contract: Receive housing assignment:
March 22 April 15
May 10 May 25
June 28 July 13

Housing assignments are sent to your UD email address and include roommate contact information as well as photos and dimensions of an average room in your building. Making changes to your roommate preferences, Honors program invitation (if applicable) or ILLC selections will require a new housing assignment and will take some time to complete. Updates will be communicated through your UD email.

Commuters

Students living with a parent or guardian within 40 miles of campus who plan to commute will complete the Verify Commuter Eligibility step on the Porches To-do List instead of the housing contract.

Select Your Meal Plan

As part of the housing contract, you'll also select a meal plan, if applicable.

  • First-year students living on campus can choose between our standard and flexible meal plans.
  • Commuter students can add a neighborhood plan or add Flyer Express dollars to their account for quick and convenient access to food options on campus.
  • Meal plans are optional for students living in an apartment or house with a kitchen.

Upload Your FlyerCard photo

The FlyerCard is your official UD student ID. With your digital FlyerCard, you can use your smartphone or Apple Watch to access buildings, attend events, make purchases and more. To set up your digital FlyerCard, you’ll upload a photo from your Porches To-do List. Beginning May 1, after your photo is approved (this can take 1-2 business days), you can download the GET mobile app, sign in with your UD credentials and set up your FlyerCard.

Complete Health Requirements

To help protect the health of our campus community, the University requires all incoming students to provide immunization records and a tuberculosis (TB) screening questionnaire by June 7.

This information can be uploaded and entered through the student portal.

Complete Financial Information and Pay Your Bill

As a confirmed UD student, you have an account established in the Office of Student Accounts, which you can access through Porches. Through this account, you can view all transactions — such as tuition, room and board, financial aid credits and payments — during your enrollment at UD.

Payment Plan

If you plan to pay for tuition and charges in full, the due dates are July 22 for fall term and Dec. 22 for spring term. Interest is assessed at 1% monthly (12% APR) on any unpaid balance.

If you prefer to pay for tuition and charges in installments, we’re pleased to offer an extended payment plan option.

Financial Checklist

  • Accept or decline your financial aid between May 1 and June 15.
  • If you’re receiving federal direct student loans, complete the following items, required by the U.S. Department of Education:
  • If you'd like someone else to manage your bills and payments, sign them up as an authorized user through "My Payment Center" in Porches so they can receive a separate login.
  • You can also complete the FERPA form in Porches. This form is required if you want to allow us to discuss your student records with a designated person.
  • If you anticipate receiving refunds for financial aid or scholarship overages, sign up for e-refunding so you can receive them via direct deposit.

Complete the Family Profile Form

Complete the Family Profile Form so your family will receive the Family News Digest and other University of Dayton messages.

Complete Community Education Modules

Incoming first-year and transfer students are required to complete four online courses (Community Education Modules) that assist students in developing a shared understanding of the values that we embrace as a Catholic, Marianist University. These modules will be available July 21.

Note: Students in the UD Sinclair Academy will complete these courses upon transfer to the University of Dayton. International students are required to complete the Hazing Prevention Course; they will receive alternate programming on the other topics.
