In individual counseling, a trained mental health professional helps students define goals, strengthen coping skills, and solve problems related to personal, social, and educational concerns. The frequency and duration of counseling varies depending on the needs of each person. However, students are typically seen 1-2 times per month for 45-60 minute sessions. Students discuss goals and length of the counseling experience with their therapist to determine what is best for them.
Our staff is trained in a generalist approach. We frequently help students who identify struggles with anxiety, depression, trauma, mild substance use issues, relationship to food & body, interpersonal issues, grief, stress, relationships, and many other concerns. Depending on the clinician, we may utilize a variety of theoretical approaches, including CBT, DBT, ACT, feminist theory, IFS, and psychodynamic therapy.
Students in need of more intensive or specialized services may be referred to seek services in the community.
Students interested in individual counseling services should come to drop-in hours at the UD Counseling Center and speak with a therapist to see if individual therapy would be a good fit.
