Seminars and Group Therapy

Seminars

The UD Counseling Center offers seminars that introduce a great deal of helpful, foundational skills and tools for managing depression, anxiety and attention/focus problems. Sample seminars include:

Anxiety and Depression Toolbox Seminar

A three-week psychoeducational seminar that provides a sound foundation of skills for effectively managing anxiety and depression and for improved mental and emotional health. This seminar is offered on Zoom. Any interested student should come to drop-in hours for more information.

ADHD Toolbox Seminar

This two-session seminar is for anyone struggling to work with their ADHD or anyone who suspects their struggles may stem from ADHD. During two sessions, students will learn more about ADHD strengths and coping skills, and craft a plan for success this academic year.

Resilience Seminar

This seminar offers psychoeducation and coping skills for students who may be struggling after experiencing traumatic experiences. This two-session seminar is offered in conjunction with individual therapy to help students more quickly understand and cope with trauma reactions.

Group Therapy

The UD Counseling Center offers groups to address concerns of students. Because our groups meet weekly, we often recommend a group to a student seeking services if they need a more intensive level of care than individuals. Research shows group counseling is an effective mode of treatment for a variety of concerns and offers unique therapeutic benefits compared to individual counseling. Flyers have always lived in community; this is an opportunity to heal in community.

Commonly offered groups include:

  • Empowerment Group
  • Food & Mood
  • Getting Unstuck
  • Lavender Flyers
  • Living with Loss
  • Social Skills Group
  • Space for Healing and Growth
  • Understanding Self and Others
  • Wise Minds

Current students can find a list of groups offered this semester and additional information in Porches.

Individual Counseling

In individual counseling, a trained mental health professional helps students define goals, strengthen coping skills, and solve problems related to personal, social, and educational concerns. The frequency and duration of counseling varies depending on the needs of each person. However, students are typically seen 1-2 times per month for 45-60 minute sessions. Students discuss goals and length of the counseling experience with their therapist to determine what is best for them.

Our staff is trained in a generalist approach. We frequently help students who identify struggles with anxiety, depression, trauma, mild substance use issues, relationship to food & body, interpersonal issues, grief, stress, relationships, and many other concerns. Depending on the clinician, we may utilize a variety of theoretical approaches, including CBT, DBT, ACT, feminist theory, IFS, and psychodynamic therapy.

Students in need of more intensive or specialized services may be referred to seek services in the community.

Students interested in individual counseling services should come to drop-in hours at the UD Counseling Center and speak with a therapist to see if individual therapy would be a good fit.
