Industry Partnerships: Collaborate With UD Engineering

Creating a world-class engineer takes more than just an exceptional education, it takes integrating that education with real-world experiences.

The University of Dayton School of Engineering's industry partners are key to our success. Thanks to their support — attending our career fairs, employing our students for co-ops and internships, and sponsoring our senior design projects — UD engineering students are on the leading edge and gain a competitive advantage.

Provide Learning Opportunities

Sponsor a Project

The UD School of Engineering welcomes our industry partners to engage in project-based learning by mentoring, creating, developing and learning from student projects.

A variety of engineering courses involve industry projects. Please let us know if you'd like to get involved with any of these areas for project sponsorship at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Engineering Innovation
  • Engineering Innovation (EGR 103): First-year, multi-disciplinary, innovation projects primarily geared towards skill development in the areas of analysis, creativity, conceptual design, design and problem-solving processes, prototyping, teamwork and project communications. Application to the development of a new product or technology meeting societal needs. Part of the Integrated Engineering Core for all engineering students.
Civil Engineering
  • Civil Engineering Design Capstone (CEE 450): Group design of complete projects, drawing on the knowledge acquired in a spectrum of civil engineering subjects. Second semester, each year.
  • Design Core: Small-scale design projects in the areas of environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation and water resources.
  • Graduate research: M.S.
Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology
  • Multidisciplinary Design I and II / Design Capstone: Combination of lecture and laboratory experiences. The focus of the lecture is on project management of engineering design, including communication, collaboration, project tracking methods, cost estimating, overhead, direct labor costs, time value of money, depreciation and return on investment. The focus of the lab is on a multidisciplinary team design project. Detailed evaluation of the Product Realization Process (PRP), including specifications, innovation, conceptualization, decision analysis, embodiment design, final design and prototyping. Analysis of the design criteria for safety, ergonomic, environmental, financial, ethical and socio-political impact.
  • Multidisciplinary Research and Innovation Laboratory (ECE 398): Undergraduate Research Experience
  • Project Management (IET 323): Prepares students to understand and be able to apply the principles of project management to processes they encounter in their jobs. Topics include the role of project manager, planning the project, work breakdown structure, scheduling project, project control and evaluation, earned value analysis, study of the structure, techniques, and application of project management including mathematical models, decision-making, styles of management, ethics and communications.
  • Graduate research: M.S. and Ph.D.

Monetary Sponsorships or Equipment/Machining Expertise

Industry partners can work together with UD student design and competition teams on monetary sponsorships or equipment/machining expertise. Some student teams use industry businesses’ equipment or experts to help create pieces for their competition projects, or create monetary sponsorships to fund their competitions.

Partner With Our Innovation Center

The UD School of Engineering's Innovation Center is home to engineering design, entrepreneurial learning and creativity. We connect industrial, entrepreneurial and community clients with real-world challenges to our student teams who are ready to find solutions. Student teams deliver research, analysis, design, prototype, testing, business plan and patent research to you in one semester!

The Innovation Center is also home to the senior design capstone for mechanical and aerospace engineering, electrical and computer engineering and all disciplines within engineering technology. Project examples include designs for test fixtures and electrical and computer systems; improvements for the manufacturing process; and ergonomic studies of existing, modified or new processes and designs.

Participate in Career and Professional Development

Participate in Professional Development Seminars

All UD engineering students participate in professional development seminars, which are key to introducing them to available career opportunities, enhancing their professional communication skills and instilling keys to success post-graduation.

Industry partner participation is critical to the success of the seminars.

Connect With Diverse Student Populations

UD's Multi-Ethnic Engineers Program hosts professional development workshops for students to build their skills as emerging professionals and learn more about various engineering industries, pathways and opportunities.

Host a Lobby Event

During the academic day, our industry partners have the opportunity for visibility and interaction in the lobby of Kettering Labs (home to the UD School of Engineering). Our engineering students are eager to learn more about you in this casual environment.

What UD Engineering Provides

  • 6' table to set up your industry display.
  • Electricity is available in the space (no AV).
  • A QR code for students to scan if they'd like to connect. Once the event is over, we'll provide you with the contact information for students that scanned in at your table.
  • Chairs for up to four representatives.

What You Should Provide

  • A tablecloth with your company's logo.
  • Information you'd typically use at a career fair or trade show to highlight your company.
  • A fun give-away or food item to encourage students to approach. While food is allowed; let us know if you're planning on something more than cookies or candy.
  • Alumni — If you have a current UD student or alumni on your team, please consider asking them to be a part of this event.
  • NOTE: You are responsible for the setup and tear down of the space provided.
I'd like to host an event, please contact Rachael Kiplinger at rkiplinger1@udayton.edu.

Attend a Career and Internship Fair

  • UD Career Services organizes campus-wide career and internship fairs during the fall and spring semesters. These events provide an opportunity for employers, students and alumni to meet and discuss internships, co-ops and full-time opportunities.
  • The School of Engineering's Diversity in Engineering Center hosts a Diversity in Engineering Industry Partner Meet and Greet twice a year. Students served through the Diversity in Engineering Center can practice networking in a safe environment while engaging with potential industry partners and employers.

Participate in On-campus Interviews

The Engineering Co-op and Internship Office hosts interviews on campus three times a year for industry partners seeking engineering students for co-op and internship opportunities.

As an industry partner, you can build relationships with a pool of potential future employees who can contribute on day one after graduation.

Interact With Professional Society Student Chapters

Industry partners can work with campus groups affiliated with national professional societies. These events provide the opportunity to observe students in leadership roles and engage students through guest-speaking, networking and sponsorship.

Take Part in a Dinner With Professionals Event

UD's Diversity in Engineering Center encourages industry professionals to engage with current and future engineering Flyers during any of the Dinner with Professional events hosted by the Center:

Dinners with engineering students

  • Women Engineering Program Dinner with Professionals (Fall and Spring)
  • Multi-Ethnic STEM Summer Bridge Program Dinner with STEM Professionals (Summer)

Partner With Faculty Research

Industry can also partner with faculty research for grant and contracts. Please contact our faculty directly, or contact the Engineering Co-op and Internship Office for help building connections.
