Building Community. Succeeding Together.

The University of Dayton Multi-Ethnic Scientists and Engineers Program (MSEP) is a diverse and inclusive community committed to the success of undergraduate students.

We foster a sense of belonging, strengthen STEM identity and promote self-efficacy by connecting students to experiential learning opportunities, guiding vocational discernment and supporting both personal and professional development.

We welcome any and all students with a variety of backgrounds and experiences to be part of the MSEP community.

MSEP Experiences by Year

Students in the Multi-Ethnic Scientists and Engineers Program commit to engage with the program from their first-year through graduation in the following areas:

First-Year Students

  • Academic excellence workshops: Attend regular workshops in the fall of your first year created to facilitate your academic transition from high school to college. The MSEP staff designs these interactive workshops and provides you with proven techniques and resources for continued academic success. Experienced MSEP students assist with the workshops and provide valuable and personal academic insight.
  • Professional development workshops: During the spring semester of your first year, you'll meet regularly for workshops focusing on professional and personal development. Workshops featuring industrial, academia, MSEP alumni, and other professional guest speakers will allow you to build networking relationships with STEM professionals and begin to envision the career path you desire.
  • Individual mentoring: As a first year student, you'll have the opportunity to meet with your holistic advisor and the MSEP staff 1-on-1. Together, you'll review your academic performance, steps toward your career path (co-op, internships, undergraduate research) and other aspects to ensure your success at UD.
  • Course clustering: First-year MSEP students are enrolled together in general sections of math, chemistry and physics courses to encourage relationship building and creation of study groups within MSEP and with other peers.
  • PEERS Mentoring Program (optional): In partnership with the Multi-Ethnic Education and Engagement Center; you'll have the ability to be paired with an upperclass MSEP mentor during your first year. There will be opportunities to meet with your mentor during scheduled group sessions throughout the year and on your own as often as you like. You'll start your college career with a valuable support system and develop the skills needed if you choose to become a mentor in future years.

Sophomores and Transfer Students

  • Sophomore success workshops: In the fall of your second-year, you'll regularly attend workshops that will encourage your continued academic progression and begin to hone skills needed to secure co-op, internship or undergraduate research opportunities.
  • Professional development workshops: During the spring semester of your second year, you'll meet regularly for workshops focusing on professional and personal development. Workshops featuring industry, academia, MSEP alumni, and other professional guest speakers will allow you to build networking relationships with STEM professionals and begin to envision the career path you desire.
  • Individual mentoring: As a second-year student, you'll have the opportunity to meet with your holistic advisor and the MSEP staff 1-on-1. Together, you'll review your academic performance, steps toward your career path (co-op, internships, undergraduate research) and other aspects to ensure your success at UD.
  • PEERS Mentoring Program (optional): In partnership with the Multi-Ethnic Education and Engagement Center; during your sophomore year and beyond you'll have the ability to mentor a first-year MSEP student. There will be opportunities to meet with your mentee during scheduled group sessions throughout the year and on your own as often as you like. You'll be able to share your experiences and be a support system for your mentee.
