The University Honors Program is happy to welcome Dr. Mary-Kate Sableski as our new Honors Faculty Fellow for Teaching. In this role, Dr. Sableski will help improve honors courses by meeting with faculty and strengthening teaching techniques. Dr. Sableski’s strong background in education will have a significant impact on the Honors Program.
As a previous UD student and cross country runner, Dr. Sableski is dedicated to serving the university. She is a professor of literacy and special needs in the Department of Teacher Education, and before coming to UD she taught at the middle school level. Teaching in middle schools allowed her to develop a passion for literacy, specifically children’s literature. Through this passion, Dr. Sableski was chosen to serve on the Caldecott Medal Selection Committee where she had the exceptional opportunity to evaluate children’s literature.
Dr. Sableski is eager to take on this new role in the Honors Program as she was an honors student herself and has worked with many students on honors theses. She loves new challenges and creating new ways to think about things. She is looking forward to meeting and working with fellow faculty while providing professional development and support.
By using her teaching skills and experiences, Dr. Sableski plans to focus on encouraging faculty to engage in a collaborative approach. This will include meeting students where they are and creating a dialogue, a conversational space for students to really optimize their learning experience. This will also allow honors faculty to make even stronger connections with students through class. Dr. Sableski will open up new opportunities and options for faculty and students to enhance honors classes by bringing in new techniques and perspectives.
Dr. Sableski’s advice to students would be to live by the Marianist mission and values, by saying Mary’s “yes” to new possibilities. It is important to align one’s choices with one’s values, along with being open to change and adaptability. There is always an option and a path and sometimes an unexpected “yes” may lead to something better than ever imagined!
We are so excited to welcome Dr. Sableski to the Honors Program! She is a wonderful addition to the team. If you see her on campus, make sure to say hello!
