About Us

The College of Arts and Sciences is at the center of a diverse community that is the University of Dayton. We are a liberal arts college that flourishes within the broader context of a comprehensive university. We are committed to lifelong intellectual, professional and personal growth through learning in the arts, the humanities, the sciences and the social sciences.

Our faculty demonstrate connected learning and scholarship by integrating teaching, research and service, and our administrative staff is well-prepared to assist with both student and faculty needs. Endowed chairs are committed to research and programming to deepen our understanding of their disciplines. The faculty and students involved in our institutes and centers work with cutting-edge technology, connect the campus with social justice issues and service opportunities and prepare students for leadership in the Catholic and Marianist tradition.

Our Academics

The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest academic unit at the University of Dayton. While we are able to provide a wide range of programming in the arts, the humanities, the sciences and the social sciences, our educational philosophy continues to focus on personal attention and close faculty-student interaction.

What We Believe

The College believes that holistic learning is essential for responsible, engaged and worthwhile living. Holistic learning teaches us to reason and to communicate clearly, to think analytically and critically, and to appreciate the value of global, societal and individual perspectives. This learning stimulates our creativity and opens our imaginations: it helps us develop historical awareness and an understanding of empirical, scientific methodologies; it gives us the ability to adapt to changing needs and conditions; and it prepares us to lead rewarding lives and to contribute to others.

Our Vision for Diversity and Inclusion

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Dayton holds the diversity of human perspectives and gifts to be indispensable resources for the academic quality of faculty members' scholarship and artistic activity. Such diversity also makes possible the education of distinctive graduates prepared for lifelong learning, leadership and service in the multicultural, globally extended communities and institutions of the 21st century.

Inclusion is an essential dimension of academic excellence. The College of Arts and Sciences' intentional commitment to inclusion shapes students' education both inside and outside the classroom, influences the composition of our academic community and informs the educational and professional climate sustained in our classrooms and workplaces.
