Student Employment

Whether you work two hours a week or 20, it can make a big difference in helping pay for your education — not to mention enriching your studies. And national research shows that students who work part-time while in college perform better academically.

All University of Dayton students, regardless of financial need, may apply for University-funded employment opportunities on campus. Positions are available in most on-campus departments. Hourly wage is based on experience and job description but starts at Ohio's minimum rate wage. Students will receive a bi-monthly paycheck to apply to their expenses, as needed.

Federal Work Study

Federal work study is awarded to those undergraduates who demonstrate financial need and positions are available in most on-campus departments. To see if you're eligible for this type of employment, complete the FAFSA in time for results to be sent to the University by May 1.

Study Abroad and Away Financial Aid

Students who choose to participate in study abroad and away programs, whether sponsored by the University of Dayton or another university, may qualify for financial aid to help defray a portion of the expenses. Please keep in mind that this aid may affect your eligibility for aid in the upcoming semester on campus.

You are encouraged to speak with a financial aid counselor early in your planning to discuss your options for financial assistance prior to committing to a study abroad program.

Financial Aid

University-sponsored Programs

If you plan to study abroad or away through one of the University-sponsored programs, you may be eligible to use your University gift aid in addition to your state and/or federal eligibility. Much of it depends on when you participate and how much of your eligibility you've already used for the year. In addition, the UD Study Abroad Scholarship was created to assist students with broadening their UD educational experience. It can be used by undergraduate students who began at UD in the Spring of 2021 or earlier when enrolled in a summer, UD Faculty-led study abroad program that involves nine hours of coursework, and is valued at $3,000.

If you are participating in one of the summer programs, please review the financial aid information in the Global and Intercultural Affair's education abroad and away guide. Tuition remission is applicable for most UD summer study abroad programs.

Non-University-sponsored Programs

If your study abroad is sponsored by another school or agency, you are limited to the use of federal aid (excluding campus-based programs) and private funding. You will not be permitted to use your University scholarship or grant money.

In this scenario, you will be required to use a consortium agreement to permit the transfer of Title IV funds from home school (UD) to the host institution (sponsor of the program). Please review the consortium section of this page for more information.

Consortium Agreement

Why do I need a consortium agreement?

The consortium agreement (.pdf) is the contract that allows your host institution to credit any and all of your financial aid funds toward your charges for attending that institution. The consortium agreement also allows UD to continue to determine your financial aid eligibility so you don't have to re-apply for financial aid at your host institution.

You are responsible for ensuring that the consortium agreement is completed in its entirety. Missing or incorrect information will delay the processing of this form and could delay when funds are released from the University of Dayton. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Financial Aid.

How does my financial aid get to the host school?

Once a completed consortium agreement is on file, the University of Dayton will arrange for your financial aid funds to be disbursed near the date that your classes at your host institution are scheduled to begin. After funds from all sources have been received, a check will be issued from the Office of Student Accounts to your host institution.

This check must be mailed directly to your host institution to comply with the terms specified in the consortium agreement. If you are receiving more financial aid funds than your actual costs (for books, airfare, etc.), your host institution will refund any credit to you according to their institutional policies. Please remember this as you may have out-of-pocket expenses to cover before you get your refund.

Summer Financial Aid

Here are some common questions concerning undergraduate student aid for the summer.

What is the tuition rate for summer classes?

The summer tuition rate has been reduced from $1760 to $1025 per credit hour for the summer A, B, and C terms. Your financial aid eligibility will depend on your full-time or part-time status, as well as your FAFSA information.

What financial aid is available for me if I take part-time courses this summer?

If you are registered and have a FAFSA on file, your account will be reviewed for federal and/or state grant eligibility. Federal grants require the 2024-25 FAFSA to be on file and state grants from Ohio require the 2025-26 FAFSA to be submitted. File your FAFSA and send it to us with our school code of 003127. Contact our office for information about utilizing federal loans, Parent PLUS loans, or private student loans over the summer

What financial aid is available for me if I enroll full-time during the summer?

Students who register full-time and originally enrolled with a net tuition guarantee will have their financial aid adjusted so that the net tuition guarantee remains in place during the summer term of enrollment.

What steps do I need to take to receive summer financial aid?

Students who complete Summer registration by April 1st will have Summer financial aid eligibility updated by April 15th. Students who complete registration after April 1st will have Summer financial aid eligibility updated within 2 weeks of registration.

Federal and state grant funds will be awarded as long as a FAFSA has been submitted. Federal grants require the 2024-25 FAFSA to be on file and state grants from Ohio require the 2025-26 FAFSA to be submitted. File your FAFSA and send it to us with our school code of 003127.

If you wish to utilize loan funds during the summer, please contact our office to determine available loan options.

What if my registration changes?

Financial aid is awarded based on your registration and may be adjusted if your enrollment changes.

Can I discuss all of the options available to me with a financial aid counselor?

To discuss available options please contact our office either via email at finaid@udayton.edu or by phone at 937-229-4141. You may also stop by our office on campus to meet in-person during our office hours.

Tuition Exchange

The University of Dayton is a member of the Tuition Exchange, a consortium of more than 640 private and public not-for-profit colleges and universities, representing 47 states, the District of Columbia, and several other countries that provide tuition assistance to dependents of individuals who work at participating schools.

Dependents of UD Faculty/Staff

Scholarships cover either full tuition, one-half tuition for a non-resident at a public institution, or a rate set by Tuition Exchange. They do not cover special fees, course overloads, or room and board. For 2024-25, private institutions that charge more than $42,000 for tuition are permitted to award less than their full tuition, but not less than the set rate of $42,000.

Who is eligible?

Please visit the Tuition Exchange section in the Employee Handbook on Porches for additional information.

Are all students guaranteed a scholarship?

Tuition Exchange Scholarships are not guaranteed, nor is admission at member institutions. Since Tuition Exchange requests that each institution maintain a balance between dependents from the home institution and students coming from other institutions, it is likely that there will be a limited number of slots available. Since the University of Dayton may not be able to accommodate all requests, the Tuition Exchange Program should not be considered as a guaranteed award.

What if I have additional questions?

Questions concerning the Tuition Exchange Program should be directed to the UD Tuition Exchange Liaison, Beth Schwartz, at 937-229-2538 or bschwartz1@udayton.edu.

Questions concerning employee eligibility should be directed to Human Resources at 937-229-2541.

Dependents of Faculty/Staff from Other Tuition Exchange Member Institutions

The Tuition Exchange Program is very competitive at the University of Dayton. Since Tuition Exchange requests that each institution maintain a balance between dependents from the home institution and students coming from other institutions, there will only be a limited number of slots available. Each year we receive more than 100 applications for approximately 10-12 offers. There is no waiting list. Grade point average, a campus visit, financial need based on the FAFSA, and service to the community are all considered when making Tuition Exchange offers.

How are the Tuition Exchange scholarships awarded for dependents of non-UD faculty/staff?

Tuition Exchange Scholarships are available only to first year applicants and are awarded at the rate of $42,000 for the 2024-25 academic year. Priority consideration will be given to those that apply for admission and by November 1 and file the FAFSA when it becomes available in December.

These scholarships cannot be used in combination with any other scholarship or grant offered by the University of Dayton. Families are encouraged to complete the FAFSA for federal loan and federal grant eligibility in December so that we can provide a complete overview of your financial aid awards.

Tuition Exchange Scholarships cover four years or eight semesters of undergraduate education. Students must remain in good academic and disciplinary standing as defined in the Student Handbook.

Students will be notified by the end of February if they have been selected for a Tuition Exchange Scholarship. To accept or decline this offer, please notify us by May 1.

What if I have additional questions?

Questions regarding UD’s Tuition Exchange Program should be directed to the Tuition Exchange Liaison, Jenni Crotty, at 937-229-4313 or jcrotty@udayton.edu.
