This summer, I had the opportunity to intern in Washington, D.C. through UD’s DC Flyers program. I spent 10 weeks in Woodley Park, a block away from the Smithsonian Zoo, with other UD students that are now my great friends. Through a connection to UD alumna Dr. Ann Hudock, CEO of Counterpart International, I was able to intern for a non-profit organization focused on international development.
As an education major, I had never worked in an office before this summer! Though I am excited to be back in a classroom working with my students, I cannot emphasize enough how grateful I am for the personal and professional growth I felt this summer. I feel much more confident in my ability to use technical reading and writing skills as well as contribute ideas to professional dialogues.
Apart from my internship, I spent 10 weeks exploring the beauty and energy of Washington, D.C., which I hope to call my future home. I loved the independence of building a new life for myself in such a vibrant city, and I will forever be grateful for the experience. For anyone considering the DC Flyers program, my advice is a resounding DO IT! The version of you waiting at the end of the experience is just one step closer to the person you are meant to be.
