In November 2023, we gathered for the 2023 Social Practice of Human Rights, co-convening with the International Conference on the Right to Development, focused on the theme – “Decolonization and Development for Africa and People of African Descent.” This SPHR23 blog series captures the discussions and shares the learning that occurred during the conference around the themes of (1) the right to development; (2) building social movements; (3) just energy transitions; and (4) identity and belonging — as applied to Africa and the people of African descent.

When Dr. Sidaard (Sid) Gunasekaran ’12 ’16 won the prestigious KEEN Rising Star Award, the organization awarded him a sleek electric guitar, worthy of a rock star. He is a rock star among students and faculty in the School of Engineering and in the aerospace engineering world.

Flashback to the morning of May 22, 2023, as I sat alone at my boarding gate, twiddling my thumbs and fidgeting my legs, thinking, “Whoa … I am about to get on a plane and live in Bolivia for 10 weeks. Am I really ready for this?” 

UD’s community is simply unmatched. And the ties created between students and alumni continue the development of our community. As the alumni engagement chair of Students for University Advancement, I have the pleasure of fostering these connections!

UD student Maddie Motes gained plenty of insight into just how intertwined sustainability is with the Walt Disney Company’s vision and everyday actions. 

From tax novice to certified preparer, Andrew Farkas, a first-year accounting major, and Benjamin Bitner, a junior accounting major, assisted Dayton residents with free tax filing through the IRS' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
