Degree Information and Courses

To receive your license, you're required to pass the the Ohio Assessment for Educators exam in school counseling.

Experiential Learning

As a student in this program, you'll participate in a practicum and internship. You can also choose from several extra-curricular activities, such as clubs and organizations, that cater specifically to your degree program.

Certificate Option

Individuals with an active LPC license who are interested in becoming a school counselor can enroll in the school counseling certificate program, instead of enrolling in a full master's degree program. This certificate can be completed in-person, online or hybrid, and prepares you to sit for the OAE exam.

Application deadlines for the University of Dayton School Counseling program:

  • Summer enrollment (early admission): Nov. 10
  • Summer enrollment (late admission): Jan. 10

Admission Requirements

Applicants to the UD School Counseling program should submit the following information in addition to the online application:

  • Official academic records of all previously attended colleges or universities must be submitted directly from the colleges or universities to the Office of Graduate Admission Processing. Hand-carried transcripts, official copies marked Issued to Student and unofficial copies are not acceptable. Students seeking school counseling licensure who received a master's degree from the University of Dayton are not required to submit transcripts.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professors or employers.
  • A personal statement.
  • Results from the GRE or MAT are required for applicants with an undergraduate grade-point average below 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.

Applicants must have attained an undergraduate cumulative grade-point average of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Applicants who have less than a 2.75 cumulative GPA may be admitted if they achieve a raw score of 40 or higher or a scaled score of 396 or higher on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or scaled scores of 149 or higher on the verbal ability and 4.0 or higher on the analytical writing sections of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). For tests administrations prior to Aug. 1, 2011, a scaled score of 430 or higher on the analytical ability section is required.

Once you've successfully met the required admission criteria outlined above, there will be a faculty review. Following the review of these materials, you may be invited to interview with department faculty.

International Admission

International students must submit English Proficiency, Visa and Financial Documentation and a WES credential evaluation along with the items listed above.

Please note that due to this program's mode of instruction, international students in F-1 or J-1 status cannot join the program and will not be considered for admission.

Dual License in Counseling

Students enrolled in the school counseling master's program can earn a certificate in clinical mental health counseling and become dual-licensed.

Real-World Experience

School Counseling students complete a 100-hour practicum, where they can start to hone the skills needed for professional practice. Students also participate in a 600-hour internship, which takes place in a K-12 school district. In both instances, students are supervised by qualified school counselors and a UD instructor.
