What to Bring?

What Should Students Bring to UD?

Here is a list of things your student will find helpful as they plan to fill their first room at UD!

For Their Room:

  • Alarm. Just in case their phone runs out of battery, a simple alarm clock can ensure they're up and ready for class.
  • Dry Erase Board/Pens. Great for brainstorming, week planning, or leaving roommates messages.
  • Fan. A little extra cooling power while the temeratures are soaring. A lot of students also appreciate the "white noise" for studying.
  • Pictures and Posters. Bring a little piece of home to their new one.
  • Under-bed Storage Containers. Great for extra supplies and seasonal clothing.
  • TV. We recommend that your student talk to their roommates about this one. Usually, one person will bring a TV for the room.
  • Desk Lamp. We're not saying they'll need to burn the midnight oil, but it's good to be prepared in case they want one more hour of study time.

For Their Bed:

Their bed is a twin extra-long, which means it is slightly longer (five inches) than a normal twin.

  • Twin XL bed sheets (available at most stores; just ask!)
  • Extra blankets/comforter
  • Mattress pad/egg crate (makes things extra-comfy)
  • Pillow/pillow case
  • Sleeping bag

Clothing:

  • In addition to their favorite jeans, sweats and hoodie, they may want to bring these items. Professional/Dress clothes (for Convocation, as well as other events throughout the year, like interviewing for that perfect internship!)
  • Gloves/hat/jacket
  • Swimsuit (the RecPlex has both a pool and a whirlpool!)
  • Workout clothes

Bathroom Supplies:

Here are some items they won’t want to forget.

  • Towels and washcloths.
  • Hair items (brush, comb, hair dryer, etc.).
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste/dental floss.
  • Shampoo, conditioner, hair products.
  • Nail clippers.
  • Shower caddy and shower flip-flops.

Laundry Supplies:

Doing laundry isn’t scary as long as you’ve got the right tools.

  • Clothes hamper/laundry bag (get something tall, rather than wide— it conserves space)
  • Detergent (HE preferred)
  • Stain removers
  • Hangers (their closet won’t have any, so they’ll want to bring them)
  • Iron (you never know, right? :)

Cleaning Supplies:

Keeping the room clean is important for sanity and success, and these items will help!

  • Dish detergent/brush (if bringing the kitchen basics, they’ll want to clean them)
  • All-purpose cleaner (all surfaces can use a good wipe down once in a while)
  • Air freshener

Paperwork:

They should bring their driver’s license and debit/credit card, and don’t forget these items as well!

  • Health insurance card
  • Emergency contact info
  • Social Security card/birth certificate for on-campus job (put these items in a safe place and tell your roommate where they are)

Medical Items:

Of course, bring any items used regularly, but they may also find these helpful.

  • Antacid
  • Advil/Aspirin/Tylenol
  • Antibiotic cream
  • Band-Aids
  • Decongestants/allergy medication
  • Cotton balls/Q-tips
  • Eye drops

Computer Related:

Help their computer excel in its new home. While none of these items are required, they might find them useful.

  • Lap desk or other stabilizer for using laptop on unsteady surfaces
  • Laptop cooling pad (helps if they leave their computer on all the time on their desk)
  • External harddrive and/or USB/thumb drive (backing up their computer is very important!)
  • Printer
  • All manuals (in case they need to reinstall something)
  • USB hub (if they have a lot of USB items like a cell phone, wireless mouse, printer, etc.)
  • Network cable (they can use WiFi or plug-in hookups in your room)

Miscellaneous:

These are things that can be easily forgotten but are good to have around.

  • Batteries
  • Extension cords/surge protectors
  • Flashlight
  • Light bulbs (if you bring a desk lamp)
  • Umbrella
  • Extra phone and electronics chargers/cables
