Out of the Vault for Reunion Weekend

By Henry Handley

As part of the University Libraries Reunion Weekend open house, the Marian Library will welcome visitors from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 8. Rare books on display include recent acquisitions and gifts as well as student favorites. UD graduates from the classes of 1974 and 1984 can find books printed 500 years earlier in Europe (1474 and 1484).

While on the seventh floor, visitors can:

  • Experience the Mary in Catholic Education exhibit and add their reflections on what Mary in Catholic education means to them on an iPad in the exhibit space.
  • Take a look at the Saint John’s Bible in a handmade oak case made by Brother M. Gary Marcinowski, S.M.
  • View a selection of Marian postage stamps from around the world donated by Thurman Mattingly Jr. ’62.
  • Browse a selection of Nativity scenes on display year-round, along with the “Mirror of Hope” sculpture in the Crèche Museum.

An additional display in the first-floor lobby — Making an Impression — highlights more student-selected rare books from the Marian Library.

— Henry Handley is an assistant professor and collections librarian in the Marian Library.
