Find the Concentration for You

Communication management will help prepare you to train and manage people, and to manage information, technology and messages in a 21st century organization. Students have launched careers in human resources, human and employee relations, client relations, product development, sales, corporate communication, recruiting, marketing, market research and many others.

The journalism concentration is focused on how news and other information is selected, gathered, prepared and disseminated. But our students do much more than just understand these processes; they practice and develop the necessary skills to perform at a high professional standard. You will consider both the tradition and the reality of an unfettered press, which is the essence of the First Amendment, as you develop a firm grasp of legal and ethical expectations of the profession. Through class assignments, work on the Flyer News and internships, you will begin to gain experience in the working practices of professional journalists.

The study of journalism at the University of Dayton prepares you for reporting, editing, management and publishing positions across a variety of media platforms. Many of our students go on to careers as reporters, editors, newscasters, copy writers, script writers, technical writers and a growing variety of online journalism positions.

Through the media production concentration, you'll focus on television and radio broadcasting, audio and video production, multimedia production and short/long form filmmaking. You can get a solid grounding in principles and practical application through production, script writing, on-camera performance and carefully designed class activities.

You can build your portfolio and professional experience through internships, working in our student-run AM-FM radio station, our cable TV station, covering athletic and other events on campus and in the community and scripting and producing documentaries about important contemporary issue. You also can assist in the design and implementation of the annual Dayton Independent Film Festival, sponsored and hosted by the Department of Communication.

Public Relations at the University of Dayton includes knowledge and professional skill development based on a foundation of strong and precise writing, strategic planning, message design and delivery across media platforms, ethics and research. Students will not only learn the why behind the how, but will also do their own campaigns in our senior-level campaigns course. Students can also join the department's chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, as well as work for the student-run PR firm within Flyer Media.
