Roadmap to Career Success

First Year

  • Review Career Services' website.
  • Update your profile in Handshake.
  • Contact Student Employment if you are considering an on-campus job.
  • Consider possible majors by taking a career mini course.
  • Shadow professionals in a specific industry and/or career field.
  • Take a FOCUS 2 assessment.
  • Meet with a career advisor to discuss your interests, skills and values.

Sophomore Year

Junior Year

  • Evaluate your options: career, graduate school, service, etc.
  • Secure an internship, externship or volunteer position.
  • Identify at least three industry and/or career options.
  • Update your résumé and cover letter.
  • Attend job fairs and network by calling, emailing or scheduling informational interviews.
  • If considering graduate school, take graduate school exams and research prospective schools.
  • Explore potential prestigious national awards, and international scholarships and fellowships.

Senior Year

  • Identify your post graduate industry or career goals.
  • Make your job search a priority in the fall semester.
  • Attend job fairs.
  • Sign up for a mock interview through Career Services.
  • Submit your cover letters and résumé to potential employers.
  • Accept an employment position or graduate school that best fits your career needs and goals.
  • If pursuing graduate school, gather letters of recommendation and complete graduate school applications and essays.

After Graduation

Flyers have access to Career Services for life — for free. You are encouraged to connect with Career Services at any point in your career for online resources, job listings, networking and personalized career advising.

Need help choosing a major, finding an internship or co-op, or applying for your first full-time position or graduate school? Make an appointment with a career advisor, who can provide résumé and cover letter assistance, interviewing tips, job strategies and more.

All University of Dayton students, regardless of financial need, may apply for employment opportunities on campus. Positions are available in many departments and the hourly rate is based on experience and job description.

Career and Internship Fair

During the Career and Internship Fair, you can meet with employers who are looking to hire interns, co-ops and full-time employees. This event is held each fall and spring. Read what employers said about the 2025 fair.

Education Interview Day

Education Interview Day is open to graduating education majors and alumni. At this event, you can explore employment opportunities with school districts and other organizations interested in hiring educators.

Workshops

A series of workshops are held each semester on topics including: choosing a major, exploring vocation, using AI in the job hunt, internship and job search tips, workplace culture and more.

Handshake, an online career database, allows you to view job listings for on-campus positions, internships, co-ops and full-time positions; research employers; schedule on-campus interviews; and more.

Through the Alumni Mentoring Program, current students and alumni can receive one-on-one mentoring from experienced alumni in their industry or area of interest.

Need a polished photo to complete your LinkedIn profile? A self-service, professional headshot booth is located on the ground floor of Roesch Library, across from The Blend. It was provided through the generosity of Career Services, the Student Government Association and an alumni donor.

Focus 2 is a user-friendly, self-paced, online career and education planning tool for college students. It will enable you to self-assess your personal qualities and explore career fields and major areas of study that are most compatible with your personality and interests.
