Student Care and Advocacy

UD's commitment to the common good starts with our commitment to student success and wellbeing. We provide intervention, support and behavioral response to students who experience personal challenges.

Case Managers work through direct 1:1 engagement with students, as well as in consultation and coordination with campus and community partners. Case Managers focus on assisting students in exploring options for resolving concerns, determining action plans for achieving positive outcomes, and building skills that empower students to advocate for themselves and successfully navigate future barriers/problems.

About Student Care and Advocacy

Student Care and Advocacy provides comprehensive case management to support students facing a wide range of personal challenges. Recognizing that student concerns are often complex, SCA helps students navigate difficulties that may impact their well-being and personal success.

What SCA Does:

  • Individualized Support: SCA Case Managers work directly with students to understand their specific situations and develop personalized comprehensive support plans.
  • Collaborative Approach: SCA works in partnership with students, campus departments, and community organizations to ensure holistic support.
  • Resource Connection: SCA connects students with relevant campus and community resources and support services to address needs.
  • Skill Building: SCA empowers students to advocate for themselves and develop coping mechanisms to overcome future obstacles.

  • Basic needs insecurity (food, housing, financial)
  • Family issues
  • Grief and loss
  • Substance use concerns

  • Crime victim and impacted parties
  • Assistance with university processes and procedures

How to Get Help

UD aims to create a community that cares for one another. The campus experience can be challenging, and seeking help — for yourself or someone else — is a great strength.

  • Students: Seek assistance for yourself by submitting a self-referral.
  • Faculty, staff, peers and community members: Submit a CARE referral to refer a student of concern.

*Please note this is not an emergency reporting system. CARE Referrals are only monitored during normal business hours (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).

For Immediate, Critical Support

If you or someone else is in crisis and needs immediate help, or if there is an immediate safety need:

  • Call 911 (UD campus phones)
  • Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741
  • Call 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline)

Share a Concern

The University of Dayton offers a wide variety of support and resources to build resiliency within students from a holistic lens.

If you have a non-urgent concern about the health, safety and/or wellbeing of a current UD student, submit a CARE Referral. Reporting behavior that causes you concern may just be one more piece of a larger puzzle that can be used in supporting students.

If you believe a student is in crisis and is in need of emergency services, please contact Public Safety at 937-229-2121.

About the CARE Team

Student Care and Advocacy works in partnership with, and under the guidance of, the Campus Awareness Response and Evaluation Team (CARE). The CARE Team is an interdisciplinary behavioral intervention and threat assessment team concerned with the health, safety, and wellbeing of the entire campus community, and is committed to creating a campus environment that is safe for learning, living and working.

The CARE Team's mission is to assess the potential threat students may pose to themselves or to others and to provide early intervention, support, and behavioral response to students who display varying levels of disruptive or concerning behavior. The team convenes regularly to identify, assess and respond to concerns and/or potential threats to the campus community.
