University Libraries
Innovating Every Day
By Katy Kelly
The University Libraries advance the academic experience of each UD student. Assignments are more hands-on than ever; so is our work. Our creative solutions make learning more equitable and accessible. We support student success through a seamless experience at the library and beyond.
Several Services, One Barbie-Themed Class
What does an academic library even do these days? The Barbie Streamhouse project showcases our multi-service approach to support students in a feminist theory and methodology course. The Streamhouse assignment was effectively streamlined with streaming video, placing Barbie dolls and a Dreamhouse on reserve and training students to use our Story Studio to record their projects.
Tech for Takeout
Media projects help students craft a story while demonstrating their knowledge of class content. Individual expression can be fostered through trendy media such as live podcasts, event coverage or man-on-the-street interviews. Thanks to support from donors on One Day, One Dayton 2023, storytellers can design their project without limits and capture stories where they happen with video and podcasting equipment they can borrow for free from Roesch Library.
Old Books, New Knowledge
Libraries faculty are also innovators in the classroom. In a new mini-course — UDI 218, History of the Book — students learned about the technological and cultural history of the book as a material object through readings, discussions and hands-on learning with historic books and manuscripts — including curating a small exhibit. Our unique-to-UD learning opportunities with special collections wouldn't be possible without donor support of the Libraries, which include Roesch Library, the Marian Library, and University Archives and Special Collections.
From borrowing items free of charge and getting up close to uniquely UD collections, impactful and cutting-edge learning is made possible through the University Libraries. The Libraries’ commitment to service ensures that teaching can continue to be creative and progressive. At UD, we like to think outside the box to get different and exciting results. Students remember these hands-on assignments alongside their positive library experiences.
Are you curious about how the Libraries can further enhance the UD student experience? Here are some of our priorities and how you can help.
- $4,000 to the Libraries Excellence Fund will help us purchase popular study furniture. $500,000 would refurbish an entire study floor such as the fourth, fifth or sixth floor.
- $5,000 to $100,000 to the Marian Library Fund would commission Marian art for the Marian Library that connects to the curriculum or student experience.
