Distinguished Alumni Award: Jeff Hoagland ’91

Jeff Hoagland’s core values of faith, family and a passion for public service were nurtured as he studied political science at UD.

Hoagland grew up appreciating public service because of his father, a parks and recreation director in Elyria, Ohio. Following his father’s footsteps, Hoagland studied political science and completed an internship with Montgomery County. Before graduating in 1991, he was offered a full-time position with the county in community and economic development.

He steadily advanced in his career, first serving the city of Kettering in their planning and development department and then switching to economic development as an assistant city manager. He then served the city of Vandalia as the city manager for six years. Hoagland worked with the Dayton Development Coalition as chief operating officer before stepping into his current position as president and CEO.

Hoagland’s excitement for the region’s future is as palpable as his commitment to serving his community. In his current role, he helps grow local companies, attract new businesses, support Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and, as a result, ensures academic opportunities lead to promising careers in Dayton.

Most recently, the Dayton Development Coalition has been one of the partners for onMain Inc., an innovation hub in development through a collaborative venture between the University of Dayton and Premier Health.

Hoagland has been married for 33 years to his wife, Jennifer ’91. He credits Jennifer for giving up her successful career to manage their home life and raise their two sons, both adopted through Catholic Social Services. They remain close with their former UD roommates and regularly attend Flyers games. Hoagland also is involved with UD through Big Hoopla, the local organizing committee for activities for the Dayton region in and around the First Four of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.
