Business Ethics & Environmental Sustainability: Day Air Ballpark Dayton Dragons game

Those BEES who attended a Dayton Dragons game at Day Air Ballpark can testify to the existence of pitcher’s mounds in modern baseball and vouch for the positive externalities prompted by downtown Dayton’s acquisition of a minor-league farm team (affiliated with the Cincinnati Reds).

The stadium anchors a vibrant neighborhood replete with condos and restaurants, and affords a view of the Requarth Lumberyard, the provider of wood to the Wright Brothers (and perhaps the wood for a few early bats, as well).

Each BEE received a voucher for refreshments which, along with cooling temperatures, dampened the spirits of the West Michigan Wildcaps enough to give the Dragons the 5-3 win.

The bigger win was the community’s acquisition of the team, the result of a public/private partnership which made the venture possible, despite unanticipated costs (at least $607,000) required to clean up the detrimental environmental legacy of the former Delco Electronics plant.
