From UD to DC: Mitchell O’Brien’s Honors Journey

By Tara McLoughlin

The University of Dayton Honors Program is proud to highlight Mitchell O’Brien, an exceptional senior who has made the most of his college experience through his involvement in Honors opportunities. Graduating in 2025 with majors in International Studies and German, along with minors in Political Science and Pre-Law, Mitchell’s journey in the Honors Program has been transformative.

A Pathway to Exploration and Growth

Mitchell joined the Honors Program after his freshman year and credits it with expanding his horizons. “It has had a huge impact on my college experience,” he shares. “It introduced me to new people and gave me the ability to explore myself and all of the opportunities available to me.”

Among the many enriching experiences, Mitchell took advantage of specialized Honors courses and the prestigious DC Flyers program. He found smaller class sizes and intellectually engaged peers to be a rewarding aspect of his studies. “The DC Flyers program allowed me to explore my vocation and meet a bunch of other awesome Honors students who are some of my closest friends.”

A Transformative Experience in Washington, D.C.

One of the most meaningful parts of Mitchell’s Honors experience was participating in the DC Flyers program, which provided him with the unique opportunity to work in Washington, D.C. without the financial burden of housing costs. Through his internship at Counterpart International, Mitchell gained invaluable professional experience in international development while also refining his skills in an office setting.

Beyond his internship, the Honors Program helped Mitchell attend a World Bank Conference, where he engaged with experts in international development and anti-corruption initiatives. “I was only able to attend because of the internship the DC Flyers Program helped me secure,” he says, emphasizing the program’s impact in connecting students with real-world opportunities.

Lessons for the Future

Reflecting on his journey, Mitchell acknowledges that the Honors Program instilled in him the confidence to pursue ambitious goals. “I think the most important lesson I will take away is to be confident in what you are doing because there will always be people behind you to help you out.” He credits the Honors Program’s dedicated staff, including Laura and others, for their unwavering support in helping him secure opportunities and navigate his career path.

Advice for Future Honors Students

To those just beginning their Honors journey, Mitchell encourages active participation. “Be active and stay involved in what the program is doing. I have developed so many relationships because I attend events and have helped out when they need a volunteer.” He also emphasizes the value of the Honors Program’s faculty and staff, noting their willingness to assist with everything from research and graduate school applications to resume reviews and career guidance. “They are some of the best people on campus and are always willing to help out students who ask.”

Mitchell O’Brien’s dedication, curiosity, and drive exemplify the values of the Honors Program, and we are excited to see all that he will accomplish in the future!
