Explore Your Research Passions with the Berry Summer Thesis Institute
By Tara McLoughlin
One of our past participants, Aila Carr-Chellman, a Political Science and Philosophy major with minors in English and Human Rights, shared her experience with BSTI and how it shaped her academic journey:
Why did you decide to join BSTI? “I was in a class my sophomore year that really spurred an interest for me in feminist social philosophy. I joined BSTI to pursue my research interest and spend time studying the things I think will make the world a better place.”
What is your thesis on? “My thesis is on Feminism and Motherhood, and the implications of technology on female being and becoming.”
Why should others apply? “BSTI is such an exceptional opportunity to pursue the things you want and forge your own thoughts and ideas about life! Especially if you're seeking to go to graduate school, research opportunities like these are so important.”
BSTI participants work closely with a faculty mentor to develop and conduct their thesis projects, participate in professional development and leadership workshops, and engage in community service. The program offers significant benefits, including:
- Full third-term on-campus housing
- A $2,000 summer fellowship
- Project funding (up to $1,500)
This is a unique opportunity to spend your summer fully immersed in research while also gaining professional and leadership skills that will serve you beyond your undergraduate years.

Don’t miss this chance to challenge yourself, expand your knowledge, and contribute to meaningful research!
