Humor Writer of the Month: David Guzman

David Guzman

Originally from Toledo, Ohio, and southeast Michigan, David Guzman has had his humor writing featured in The New Yorker Daily Shouts, McSweeney's, Points in Case and other online outlets. His piece "The Risks Of Living In This Super-Tall, Ultra-Thin Skyscraper" was the third most popular Shouts piece of 2021 with The New Yorker.

Guzman has written sketch comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York, including for Maude Night, the theater's signature sketch comedy showcase. He also contributes to the weekend sketch show ASSSSKETCH, and he's currently a sketch comedy writing instructor at the UCB Training Center.

He wrote on the video staff for The Onion during the 2016-2017 election cycle and continues to contribute features material to the website and print edition. Guzman also wrote and created the comedy podcast miniseries Welcome To Wealthy, an adaption of the Upright Citizens Brigade stage show he wrote of the same name, as a parody of economic and financial advice shows.

He most recently celebrated the release of his novel Pole Antarctica: The Doomed 1905 Gabriel Expedition to the Bottom of the World (Humorist Books), a comedic satire about a fictional attempt to reach the South Pole that fails at each step of the way. It is his first novel.

Guzman graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he wrote for the campus satirical paper The Michigan Every Three Weekly. Today he lives with his family in Brooklyn, New York. When he's not writing, Guzman is trying to run as much as possible, having run seven marathons and many other long distance events.
