Humor Writer of the Month: Matt Schatz

Matt Schatz is the author of Shoes Last Longer in LA (Kung Fu Treachery Press), a debut poetry and light verse collection hailed as “brilliant, hilarious and poignant” and “the funniest book of the year!” An award-winning writer and composer, he has written a number of his acclaimed plays and musicals, including  A Wicked Soul in Cherry HillThe BurdensAn Untitled New Play by Justin Timberlake and The Past, A Present Yet to Come.

His work has earned top honors, including the Kleban Prize in Musical Theatre, the Edgerton New Play Award, the ASCAP Foundation Harold Arlen Musical Theater Award and the Reva Shiner Comedy Award.

Matt has also written and developed extensively for TV and film. He co-wrote the pilot for Netflix Animation’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory series with Oscar-winner Taika Waititi, and just completed a new pilot for AMC with writer Donnetta Lavinia Grays. Matt also wrote the songs for Season 3 of the hit Spotify/Gimlet podcast The Two Princes. He is currently working on a new musical adaptation of The Time Machine with composer Jeff Thomson, among other projects. Matt lives in Los Angeles with his wife, librarian Jenna Hymes, and their two small daughters, both unemployed.
